Huh? Toll bill from Good To Go Washington State

I just received a $2.75 toll bill from "Good To Go!" from Washington State DOT. Very odd since I've never driven to WA. I verified that toll free phone number on the bill matched up with the WSDOT website. I called the number and the WSDOT rep looked up the Notice and examined the photo of the vehicle that incurred the toll. He said the license plate was hard to read and he couldn't tell what state it matched. He said the car could be a Chevy (which is definitely not my registered vehicle) but maybe not. He ended up dismissing it. Looks like they send out notices to random drivers hoping some poor fool pays it. Sheesh.

Wow. I would think if they can't fully read a license plate they wouldn't just guess and send a bill out. Sounds like your theory is right.

This is utterly laughable, I mean "close enough, right?"....

I would have been tempted (only tempted) to tell him that if an arm wasn't outstretched out the window waving "the bird" at the camara.....then it definitely wasn't me....

Whoo, this reminds me of a time we received a letter and bill from Arizona. It was addressed to my husband and involved a ticket for running a light or speeding or something like that. They had traffic cameras so the letter included a photo. I looked at the photo and said who in the hel- is this? Turns out the letter went to his brother - the guy who lived in AZ and whose mug was in the photo. (I guess from the license plate). The brother in AZ received the letter, said it wasn't him and blamed it on my husband so the courts sent the letter to Michigan.

I had to get a copy of my husbands license, respond to the letter and then placed a call to family in AZ, explaining that if this wasn't straightened out, quick fast and in a hurry, I would be travelling out there and breaking my foot off in someone's...................

So the software they use in reading the plates made an error, or there was a data entry error. T/he issue is resolved, is it not? No harm done?

Why do people immediately jump to the conclusion that there is a nefarious plot to send bills to people who have not driven on the toll roads? I would hate to be that paranoid.

You entirely missed the point though I'm not surprised.

Flagrant errors cost money. Taxpayers' money.

My vehicle did not match the vehicle in the toll photo.

My license plate number did not match the plate number in the photo.

My license plate (state) did not match the plate in the photo.

There was absolutely nothing in the toll photo that could identify my vehicle to that one yet I was sent a bill. Because of this resources were wasted to follow up on the mistake.

To excuse sloppy errors by shifting the focus of the issue while inferring I'm "paranoid" is ridiculous. No wonder there's so much waste in government. People either don't care or are oblivious to the problem.

@tansy I've seen plastic covers for license plates. Only when you look at it straight on are the numbers are visible. A bit high, low or from the sides it's blurred. Totally illegal but drivers do it anyway to avoid tickets.

Not very fond of WA state. Too dark and cold for me.

Actually, I think it's good to know they attempt to go after people. (Even if they got it wrong this time). During a recent trip through West Virginia, a nearby car ran through three toll booths. I was frustrated because we were paying $2 each time and it seemed like the toll booth operators were doing nothing about it. The driver would slow down like they were going to pay then accelerate quickly as they got up to the window. At the last two booths, we gave the cashier the license plate # of the car, and she said they had cameras and would be sending them a bill. I wondered if they would ever see any of that money from those two. The driver appeared to be around 16 or 17 and the passenger appeared to be 40s. I thought that was so wrong for the older man to seemingly encourage the young driver to do that. Again, I hate this happened to the OP, but I think it's good to know they are trying to hunt down people who run through the tolls.

Yeah, that's not good.

The toll was $2. It had gone unpaid for one month and a few weeks so the penalty was an additional 75 cents (pretty steep). Apparently an unpaid toll can end up with hundreds, even thousands of dollars in penalities if ignored. Because it's a moving violation points can also be assessed to your driving record.

I don't know how it goes if the driver is out of state. I guess s/he would have to avoid traveling there if s/he doesn't want to get stopped by police and have their license run.

It's a terrible way to live; seeing plots and schemes and theft and scams everywhere. It's sad.
