@SahmIam- I live in Metro Atlanta. Canton is north of the city and Peachtree City is south. I've never heard of Woodmont. I'll be glad to help you if I can. My first question to you would be are you coming here for a job? If so, you should concentrate your search near your employment of you can. Our rush hours are brutal.

I live north of the city.

You are NOT even kidding about the traffic! Atlanta traffic is about the worst traffic I have ever encountered!

If I lived there, i would be sure to live very close to my workplace!

Could you be thinking of Woodstock? It is near Canton. Totally agree with gighetgh, live near your place of employment! Traffic is terrible. All of those areas are very nice, lots to do etc. If you are looking south of ATL, look at Newnan also...near Peachtree City.

*avoid south of the city
*avoid the city
*traffic is horrendous (MD/DC/VA ain't no vacation)

Like everyone, looking for EXCELLENT schools, close to a large hospital (inlaws will be relocating with us and they are in their early 80's and my eldest is disabled), low crime and close to shopping without it being in my face. Suggestions on what to look at/research/sites/areas/etc?

@SahmIam- I'm partial to my area. Cobb County, specifically East Cobb County. Still manageable traffic, close to three malls without them being too close, lower taxes than Fulton County (which is the county Atlanta proper is in). Anything you could need right by us. Three very good hospitals close by (Northside, Emory/St. Joseph's and North Fulton). The Roswell area is very nice. I'm VERY familiar with it. It's next to east Cobb, but in Fulton County so the taxes are higher. The cities of Milton, Alpharetta and John's Creek, just north of Roswell would be good too, all in Fulton County, with great schools. Oh....part of the city of Roswell is in East Cobb County. The high schools in East Cobb are some of the best in the state (Walton, Lassiter, Pope).

We don't have a Buck County.

I've lived here, north of the city, for 46 years. You asked about Canton. It's north. A little too far north of the city for my tast, but a nice area. You'd be further from the hospitals there.

Commuting to the city will NOT be an issue. South of the city has not been suggested due to crime issues but then Peachtree was given to me and I saw it's south of the city, so.... that's why I'm asking here.

When it comes to housing, you sure do get a lot for money!

I was born and raised in Georgia. My parents currently live in Peachtree City. I can agree that traffic is bad. DH and I live in Stockbridge and our area of I-75 is busy all the time.It is south of Atlanta, as well. Learned necessary back roads quickly. That aside, IMHO, Peachtree City is a very nice place. Buckhead, just north of downtown Atlanta, VERY pricey, lots of private schools in the area. Lots of older homes.

In Atlanta, everyone raves about Emory Hospital, but my father recently spent a month, over two stays, at Northside Hospital's main location in Sandy Springs and while he didn't make it, I'd be surprised if anyone could get better care than he received there. My sister and I thought Northside was exceptional, as they were last summer when he had a stroke. 1st class.

Gwinnett County has the best school systems and lowest taxes. I pay $2700 a year and $1700 goes to the school system. House is 3000 sq ft - $270k. Traffic has become unbearable and cannot wait to escape. One hour commute in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon. Your best bet is Gainesville, Columbus, Athens or Savannah. Hospitals are all over Atlanta. I have lived here over 40 years and would not recommend it,

You want to avoid the south because of crime and corruption. That also applies to DeKalb and most of Fulton County. Taxes are much higher than you think, and Atlanta has VERY high water bills. For some reason, they still can't get their billing issues fixed after all these years. Any area that can keep you off 75, 400 or the north side on 285 is a bonus.

Douglas, Cobb, Gwinnett and Walton counties all have great areas, but you have to do your research.

I should add that traffic can vary greatly depending on direction and time of day. The three freeways I mentioned above though can be brutal most daytime hours. I need to go to Chamblee this week, and I'm dreading the 285 portion.

Woodstock is a beautiful, little growing town... I know, have lived out here since the early 90's, plus I am really close to Canton. There is a Northside hospital in Canton, a huge Northside Hospital being built on I-575 and Piedmont Hospital is in Jasper.. we love it out here. We are Kaiser patients and have a Comprehensive Clinic in Kennesaw and there's offices in Holly Springs..

Big noooooooooo to Gainesville. I go through there constantly at both rush hours, and it's awful. Most go to Athens for medical care, and it's not exactly the next town over. They also get a lot of North Georgia commuters.
