Our Neighbors

Making our lives so unpleasant and miserable. The boy just turned eight and they got him a full size basketball hoop which he can't even reach with the ball so the father is playing with it, and the kid is screaming and pulling on his shirt. A four-wheeler that sounds like a chain saw, and a youth compound bow. So now my relaxing Sunday afternoon has turned into the pounding of a ball on the driveway right next to our LR windows, the sound of the bike's motor, and that kid screaming. The bow really bothers me because we have birds, rabbits, and squirrels in our yard. I don't think they (the bow) are even allowed within the city limits. We reported them once because they have an open fire pit that's against code. This guy thinks he is so special he does not have to follow the laws and rules like the rest of us.

We have had some neighbors in our day, too. I can only suggest you run a fan in the house, to drown out the noise.

As far as the bow situation, I really have no idea what to do regarding that - sorry.

I do understand your pain, I feel for you. Some people are just impossible and you can't let yourself go crazy. It isn't worth it!!

Funny how every neighborhood seems to have one. We don't have any particular issue with the problem family but they purposely do things to get people angry, like mowing lawn at 7am on Sunday.

Want to trade places with me? I'll take your basketball if you take my band in the garage neighbors and loud music until 2:00a.m.(2) neighbors. How about it? The filthy neighbor with dog poo on my property is cool now took 6 years of fussing.

Maybe they will violate the noise ordinance. Unfortunately, it will get worse over time. The neighbors across the street put up a basketball hoop for their son. He didn't do much with it until he was in high school, then he'd have friends over and they'd play until 11pm. I grew to hate basketball. Luckily he went away to college, then the house was sold. It's still there. The new boy living there is about 5, so it may happen again.

If you can't talk with them about it, the only other option is to turn them in if they are really loud. What about the other neighbors. Maybe you can band together.

This is a very interesting thread. We moved here in 1997 and most of the kids were the same age - now many have grown older and moved on. In the mean time we've had several houses built as well as bought and sold.

Our children are young adults and in college and I miss the 'the sounds of summer'. Across the street from us are two boys who have a basketball hoop and they like to play until 10:00 and guess what? My husband and I don't mind a bit. We LOVE the sound of children playing and having fun.

We live in the country and I detest the sound of gun fire..rapid paced gun fire ...which is perfectly legal where we live. I'll choose quads and basketball over that any day.

Your feeling about this intrusion is entirely legitimate, but my neighbors have a basketball hoop outside my living room window as well. They've raised their own kids, then their eldest daughter's foster kids. All of the neighborhood kids play on our dead-end street and I park away from my house to give them room to play. I love the sound of the kids playing in the street! Oddly, the boy who uses the basketball hoop looks like my nephew. This kid reminds me so much of my nephew that I can't object no matter how much he bounces that danged ball!

The couple who owned the house before me didn't enjoy the kids, which is totally legitimate, but I just love having them here. At one time, I'd have neighborhood children literally climbing in my kitchen window while I was drinking my morning coffee, so, of course, I had to draw a line.

Bad neighbors - everybody's nightmare, eh?

We are pretty lucky on our little street but the guy who owns the house on one side of ours (actually, I think his mother actually owns the house) has become a problem because he decided, out of nowhere, to start a feral cat population explosion.

It is so irrresponsible to attract them by feeding them and just let them over-populate and spread disease. I've tried to get my husband and two of our other neighbors (also guys because this guy doesn't seem to give women much credit) to get together and talk to him. All of us take care of the birdies and it's very upsettings to have to deal with this thing.

My point is just that if he wants to feed them - fine. But it becomes his responsibility to have them spayed/neutered, get shots, and then bring them into HIS house.

You have 3 choices:

1) Move

2) Ignore and accept

3) Use the law to enforce good conduct from your neighbors.

I mean, there really isn't anything else you can do. Your neighbor has the right to put up a basket ball hoop (if there are no rules about it). Kids have the right to run around, yell, play and do what kids do (unless you live in an over 55 Adults Only community). The sound of Big Wheels, motorized toys, etc is all part of kids living there. When they have friends over, they play outside and they get loud.

Where, exactly, do you expect them to play and burn off energy?

Now, the bow is another thing. Check the law in your area. You may be surprised at what you find. In the end, unless your property is damaged in some way by this neighbor, you can't do anything except talk to him (now sure why but ok) about it.

Wow, that compound bow seems really scary. I would think its use in a neighborhood would be illegal, it would be here, especially by a child. If I were you, I'd call the police just to ask what the regs are for that.

I get the basketball thing, our next door neighbors' son used one in the front of their house for years, and he had numerous kids over playing with him. I had a talk with myself and decided I could handle it, it was the sound of kids and life.

We had a garage band on the other side for about 6 months. They played until 5 am most of the time and we had to call the police often. Long story, but we got them kicked out finally.

Now we have aloof, unfriendly neighbors where the band was, and the boys of basketball grew up, the son became a hero in several ways.

The way to keep feral cat colonies under control is to do TNR, which stands for Trap, Neuter, and Release, because adult feral cats seldom can be made in to house cats.

I commiserate on your issues with your neighbor. You might try having a friendly chat but it may not do any good.

At my prior house the neighbors put up a basketball hoop right by the fence. It was actually closer to my bedroom window and patio then their house areas. I hated the ca-chung-ca-chung-kathoong. We were on pretty friendly terms so I asked if they could move the thing. And she said it was in the only place that had cement.

That started me on my quest to move to a quieter area.

Funny thing tho, when the neighbors on the other side of her house moved she told me she hoped that whomever moved in did not have a noisy dog!

I wanted to smack her.

I had a neighbor like that , he was a real beauty. He felt entitled because his family is prominent in town. When he and his family moved, I did the happy dance !

Thanks for that info! I wish the guy would be responsible, but I don't expect that to happen.

The neighbor behind us bought his sons a BB gun for Christmas. They have already shot our patio doors twice. Neighbors can be so annoying. They think the world revolves around them and their noise

We've had trouble like that. Explained to the neighbor and they set a cut off time. DH had a problem with football being thrown in the street in the evenings. I sent him out there to "talk" to the big kids. He did ... he joined in ... and they learned a cut off time and a new player. I think he misses those boys.

The cops would have been called on that those events. First time, well a warning from the cop should be enough to stop the behavior. Second time? See you in court. Of course, in my area, a BB gun being fired is against the law in a neighborhood setting; I know that isn't the same everywhere.
