Quilt or Comforter?

I have always had comforters on my bed, whether they are down or down-alt. I love the weight and feel of them; I don't buy heavy duty ones, I don't live where it snows.

I have never had much use for quilts; to me they aren't as warm and don't serve the same multi-function as a comforter.

I have seen a quilt in a catalog that I LOVE. But it costs what a very nice down-alt comforter would cost, and the shams are priced singly. Even though I could get by with one, the price of the quilt + sham is the same as a real down comforter.

The reviews universally praise the quilt's beauty, but they also say that it's lightweight, on the thin side, and would not be warm, and several people felt it was overpriced for a quilt of the weight it is.

I don't mind spending the money for something even a little bit versatile, but with the reviews I'm thinking I might end up regretting it. Yes, I know I can just have a blanket underneath and am willing to do that - that's how much I like the quilt.

I use thin quilts during the warmer months and down comforters with a thin quilt during the winter months. I keep the temp low during the winter (around 58-60). I grew up with the window opened an inch during the winter for the fresh air and nothing beats snuggling down into warm blankets on a cold night : )

I love quilts for their color and handmade - like appearance. However, they aren't warm enough for me. I use them on our spare beds and we use a comforter on our bed.

Quilts are easier for me to take care of, in that they fit in our washer and dryer.

I usually pay too much for quilts and comforters that I like, with shams, etc. I feel like I don't have to replace them often.

I use quilts yearround and/or a duvet with a down comforter in the winter. I like that they are easy to wash (I have a queen but I often buy king sized).

You could check the rebates places and maybe there would be an extra incentive.

I prefer the weight of a comforter year-round. I even took a twin-size comforter to the hospital for the weeks of my knee replacements.

Thanks for your input, ladies.

I agree that quilts are easier to wash and care for. Comforters are a PITA to wash & dry.

I could, I suppose, use a comforter under the quilt in cold weather. I also have space issues; I live with others and have one SMALL closet - no room for extra blankets, comforters, etc. so I can't just exchange things from a nice-sized linen closet :-(

I have both on DH's & my bed and also on the bed in the spare room, but both pieces aren't used during sleep. For sleep, the quilt gets folded back to just covering our calves and feet (or could be completely removed, if desired). DH and I have a cotton sheet and the down alternative comforter, encased in a duvet cover, that we cover up with. I like the idea of being able to remove that duvet cover for laundering and being able to air out the comforter without washing often. My intention with the quilt is that it's like the idea of a bedspread to make the bed pretty when it's all made and dressed up with the shams and decorative pillows. We just did a bedroom makeover about six weeks ago and I love walking into our bedroom and seeing my big, pretty bed.

I love a good old bedspread. I prefer chenille, but I have several matelasse and they are the perfect weight for summer and winter. They're easy to wash and dry.

If you love the way it looks, you should get it. It will bring you such joy! I painted my home office pale blue with a particular floral rug in my mind's eye that I wanted to find to go with it. About five years later, I found a rug just like it at QVC. It was a wool needlepoint with gigantic flowers in all different colors over a gray-blue background. The best thing was that two days after I received it they cut the price in half, so I got a big rebate under the 30-day price guarantee. That rug has brought me more joy than anything else I could have bought. You can always return it if you don't like it. It's worth the risk and the price of possibly returning it!

Used to dislike the look of quilts but now I only want 100 cotton anything on my bed. The look of quilts are so exciting nowadays and almost no comforters have 100 cotton backing anymore. My bed is king size and I love my bedding washed not dry cleaned.

@luv-the-Q Growing up, bedspreads were all we ever used. When I was shopping for my bedroom makeover, I was actually thinking about a bedspread but had a dickens of a time finding them. While I like the look of chenille, I didn't want the shedding. I gave some serious thought to an old-fashioned hobnail bedspread, but passed because they're on the heavy side and I wouldn't look forward to washing it. So I started looking on various sites for bedspreads and I kept ending up on quilt/comforters/bed-in-a-bag sets. I ended up buying a quilt and shams and am very happy with them but that doesn't mean that someday I'll find a bedspread. Maybe when I do the next bedroom makeover after the last one leaves the nest.

Neither for me. I like a regular bedspread. I have always slept with 100% acrylic blankets. They are hard to find now. But I have made some awesome finds on ebay over the last year. All brand new never used, mind you, but a couple of them were literally 40 years old in original packaging. Now I have more than I could ever use for the rest of my life. That won't stop me from purchasing a special color if it shows up, ha ha.

Thank you ladies, for all your comments & suggestions. I went ahead and bit the bullet - and when I ordered it, found that it doesn't ship until 9/13(!) They must have had to do a re-order. For those who think QVC's s&h is bad, the s&h on the two pieces is $18!! But there was a $10 discount and no tax in my state, so...sigh. I could have saved a whole $5 if I'd ordered it from an affiliate catalog but I didn't bother.
