A red string on your wrist?

I actually looked at Amy Stran's facebook and noticed a comment on a photo.

Amy did have a red string tied on her wrist. I have seen this before and wondered about it. Seemed kind of odd to me, as it was always on someone who had expensive clothes and jewelry, so what's with the string?

The comment on her post called in a Kaballah something. The comment was not complimentary. I am wondering if anyone knows what it means.

It is an offshoot of Judiasm. It gained a lot of attention years ago when Madonna started practicing it. Philip Berg the rabbi of the Kabbalah center where Madonna went and who she was very close to was investigated by the IRS to try and determine if he and his family used funds for "personal enrichment". I don't know if they found anything or not though.

When I lived in Panama years ago, all newborns and children always wore something red to keep away the evil eye. It could be a ribbon, earrings, a string on a wrist, a hair bow, socks or anything with red on it.

I didn't realize it was also used to protect against the evil as raven and Jane said. When it is used in that capacity is it associated with Kabbalah also or completely separate?

yes it's associated with Kabbalah........the red string is supposed to come from a string that has been wrapped around the tomb of Rachel, who they view as the great matriarch, it's wrapped around the tomb seven times............the string is then cut in pieces and it's one of those pieces you tie around your left wrist..........you have someone you love tie it with seven knots while you say the prayer..................................raven

@Irshgrl31201 look up Panamanian culture and also other Latino cultures as well. Wearing red also keeps away illness and bad luck.

When Kabbalah was trendy (still is, a bit) it was promoted as being for everyone and one did not have to be Jewish in order to follow it or take classes. There is more than one Kabbalah tradition (spelled differently), and it can be Christian or New Age. It's esoteric mysticism - kind of the mental equivalent of alchemy.

. About 20-25 yrs I was helping a friend clean out her Mother's apartment and we found red knitting thread about 4 inches long, with a note saying she had been added to their Prayer list. All notes from all TV evangelists. ------tedEbear

@Moonchilde it has been called New Age however, further research has shown it to be from the Babylonian times. Ostensibly of a diaspora and captivity whereby Rabbis under the influence of the Ancient Mystery religions developed the Talmud and this was an offshoot. It was overtly very popular during the Madonna Era (by the way, has that passed). Quite an interesting study. I am not a devotee, but, I love to study religions and their precepts and how they influence behavior.

I am Jewish and have worn a red string around my wrist for a long time, long before Kabalah became fashionable, in fact my Mom had a red ribbon on my crib and carriage to ward off the "evil eye". The word kunahora (I am sure I have the transliteration in correct) means to ward off the evil eye

Kabbalah is a very serious mystical tradition - not a "cult." some of the popular offshoots of today hardly represent this very demanding path to spirituality, dating back centuries. i believe the red string symbolism is practiced by many different spiritual traditions.

I worked with a Jewish psychiatrist who always encouraged us to wear something red. He wore red shoes and I tend to wear red shoes. On those nights at work when I'm not wearing red, there seems to be a better chance of things going off the rails. Call me superstitious, but I've decided to buy red eyeglass frames. In my line of work, every little bit helps!

@I am still oxox you are 100% correct poo poo poo Spitting (ptooey ptooey ptooey shortened to poo poo poo) and blowing is part of the ritual of the red ribbon. I've carried a piece of red ribbon in my wallet for as far back as I can remember. My mother was a strong believer, and wore a little red ribbon on her bra when she got sick.

As far as Kaballah goes, I really have no interest in its meaning.

I had a good friend who was a rabbi and had studied the Kabbalah.

The Kabbalah is the mystical side of Torah.
