Comment Made to Me Yesterday

Yesterday, I went to Costco, to pick up my dad's prescriptions.

While I was waiting for the script to be filled, a woman, a total stranger, said to me as she walked by, "Oh, poor dear! You look so sick!"

I just smiled and said, "No, I'm just tired", and honestly, I was tired.

I can't fathom saying to a perfect stranger, "Oh, my! You look so sick!"

Would you say that to a total stranger?

I wouldn't.

In fact, I think it was kinda rude of her to say that.

I think what I should have said instead was, "You're right. I am sick. In fact, I have a highly contagious disease.". *lol*

Do you think what she said was rude?

tired.. Comments about appearance should not

be uttered, unless they are complimentary.

Who knows what else was going on in this woman's head.

I think that anyone who would say this to a total stranger must have some issues.

When you are in a situation like this don't you wish you had a good comeback? I always get mad at myself because I can never think of a good response on the spot and then later get all these good ideas. But, it's too late.

I might think that the person was unstable and the best thing to do would be to ignore them.

A response wouldn't really serve any purpose, would it?

Maybe rude, but also maybe concerned that you were okay. After all, you were at a pharmacy.

You have to decide how to frame what she said, but most days I'd go with concerned because that's what would make me feel better.

I try not to waste my limited emotional energy on people and incidents that are so random as that woman's comment, and getting upset just adds to any exhaustion I already feel some days.

Obviously, this person forgot to engage their "brain" before saying something so insensitive.

I am sure she just thought with the location and you probably did look tired that the medicine was for yourself. It is so hard to go get prescriptions ect.. when you are the one who is ill. It is one of the few times I miss my ex. On the other hand she should be careful and not assume.

My Mom for many many years always regretted asking our new neighbor over the fence one day how soon was her due date, since she looked like it could be any day? The dear sweet woman said "I am not pregnant" They still became great friends for a very long time. Mom never got over her humiliation.

People I know always ask me if I'm tired or not feeling well when they see me somewhere without makeup. I don't wear much make-up so they can't quite tell what's different.

That was rude of her to say.

Once I was scrubbing a house from top to bottom--so I didn't look pretty at all.

The UPS man came to the door and said 'Thank goodness your meds are here!'

Once I bumped into a priest from my childhood at a restaurant and he said 'Lucky Charm--you used to be so skinny--what happened?'

Also, once I had on a beautiful linen pintucked maxi dress and someone asked me when I was due. I was 53 years old. And I told her!

I think it was rude. I could understand a good friend telling you that but not a stranger. We should be lifting people up and that did nothing to lift you up. You did the right thing to not comment. There is a part of me that would have wanted to respond with, "if you only knew...please don't left the health department know I left quarantine to come here"

Because none of us were there, we can't hear the tone of her voice or see her expressions.

While seeming rude, it very well just could have been her way to acknowledge the look of tired you were feeling and showing. And sometimes having someone just notice the tired/sick/stressed out reality we are in should make us feel better, that someone notices, and acknowledges our struggle.

I think people need to quit looking to be offended about everything, and realize that sometimes people or their words come off to us quite different than they are intended to, depending on our moods, or personality differences.
