Was at Albertsons here in Durango and they were roasting chilies already....how about there? August 1st seems early.....DW

We would get fresh roasted chilies in Grand Junction. I could smell it from blocks away, AWESOME!!!

@dancingwoman. Yes, I've heard the chili harvest in Hatch is early this year.

@3suwm5 Do you live in Grand Junction? My mother was from there. Both great-grandparents and grandparents had cabins for years on Grand Mesa. We lived in other parts of the country but visited there every summer. Nice town but it has really grown.

kachina - we lived there for 5 years, have family that have been there about 10. Went up on the Mesa many times, we love to fish.

I miss the orchard stores the most, fresh produce 7 months a year and the vineyards - awesome.

@3suwm5. I spent many happy hours fishing on Grand Mesa on Baron Lake where we could only use row boats because of all the kelp in the water. The cabins were just across the road from the lake. Mother said she spent half her childhood rowing boats on that lake; I think that's why many families had kids.

@3suwm5 @Kachina624 there is a grange hall near our house and a lady set up a stand in the parking lot. She's been selling early peaches and very early Olathe corn....tomatoes and other veggies from Grand Junction....

i love this time of year...and I LOVE the aroma of roasting chiles....DW

Lol there is nothing better than the smell of roasting chiles...if you don't live in the SW most people have no idea what we are talking about...

the roaster guys set up 55gal mesh drums that rotate. They have propane burners under them. The chiles are dumped by the box full...used to be burlap sacks full...into the roasters and turned till they are blistered....then dumped into big plastic bags...

you take them home and let them cool in the bag....then I bag them 20 to 25 to a bag then freeze them...

As we are waiting for them to cool so we can handle them ..DH and I light the grill and warm corn tortillas...when warm we peel a chile...put it on the tortilla...melt cheese for DH...vegan cheese for me on the warm chile and eat....pure heaven...Hatch green chiles....the best...DW

My girflfriend just sent me a note this morning, said she got Palisade peaches in the metro suburbs a few days ago.

It's just tooooooooooo much for me - yikes!!!

@3suwm5. The question is what metro??? I'd give anything for some of those peaches. I've gotten beautiful peaches at the City Market stores. Unfortunately they're all in Colorado.

Yes Kachina - she got them in CO suburbs' farmer's markets. We do get their peaches, here in the midwest at the grocery stores, probably in the next week or so.....CROSSING MY FINGERS FOR SURE.

While in gj, I would go to the orchards and take home at least a dozen every week. I'm crying right now just thinking about it.

City Market here in Durango has Olathe corn 6/1.00 ... I didn't get any..they are way small...kinda early for those too..the peaches I've had so far are cling..and are 3 paper towel peaches to eat..nice and juicy...I'm waiting for the cling free peaches...they are the best for freezing...DW

@dancingwoman. My mother always claimed Olathe corn was the best in the world. It does seem early for corn and peaches.
