Cleaning Dyson cyclones

Dyson says to only use compressed air to clean the cyclones. But there is no metal, or workings in the cyclone. It's basically a plastic tube. Dry dusting a dirty cyclone is like "cleaning" a very dusty car with a leaf blower. It's not clean, just less dusty.

Have you risked washing the cyclones with water?

I have a dyson cannister vac & my DH takes it all apart and cleans it throughly, lets it sit a few days to dry completely them puts it back together, about once a year.

There are videos on you tube about this. I decided to try it with my stick vac, got the battery wet and now may have to replace it. That's why they say compressed air only but maybe you are much more careful.
