What do you Consider a "Token Gift?"

I was just reading the thread from the poster who was invited to a second wedding of a friend of her daughter's. She was marrying the same man again after having a huge wedding the first time, and she was asking advice about what to give for a second wedding gift.

The answers were quite varied, and several people suggested a "token gift." I've often wondered what you think a token gift or gift card is.

I'd say maybe $25, but that seems more cheap than token. But then again, if it were up to me, I'd give this ditz nothing.

Ideas on token gifts?

I don't think the "token" bit is about money, I see it as "Been there, done that... already."

Nice candle for the home. Fancy bath soap. Board game. Any bits and pieces for entertaining. Basalmic vinegar. Wrap very nicely and go on with your life.

Does that sound a little rude? Didn't mean it to, but that's my thoughts.

I could be off track, but what came to mind for me with the term 'token gift' was just a gift given out of a sense of duty. It wasn't chosen specifically for that person, knowing that it is something that person would like. But it was just a 'well, I have to give a gift so I'll just snag something easy so I can say I did it' type of deal.

Is that messed up?

I enjoy shopping and giving gifts to those I care about - a lot of thought goes into it.

BUT

I learned years ago that having 'small items' tucked away for that 'wha if' moment comes up is essential too.

We usually always give money for weddings and graduations, other occasions something thoughtful is nice.

I still vote for a nice card with a lovely handwritten note. Period. if you must, tie the card to a beautifully wrapped bottle of wine or champagne.

A token gift is anything that is not heartfelt but feel you have to do it.

Something symbolic like, "towels" . . . for when she's ready to throw the towel in again.

I would only attend that kind of wedding if the bride was a daughter of a very good friend. A friend of your daughter's???? NO!!
