Blue or green? U.K. split over swatch's color

CUMBERNAULD, Scotland (AP) — A survey from a Scottish eye care company could be sparking a controversy similar to last year's debate over the color of a dress.

Optical Express said on its website that it conducted a survey in the United Kingdom

asking whether a swatch of

a teal-type color

was blue or green.

Sixty-four percent of more than 1,000 people who responded said it was green, according to the company. Thirty-two percent thought it was blue.

But when the same people were shown the same color between a pair of distinctly blue swatches, the company said many changed their minds. Ninety percent said it was the color was green.

The results show how "our visual interpretations of the world around us can differ quite sharply," Optical Express said.

Scotland also was the epicenter for a color debate last year. A photo of #TheDress taken ahead of a Scottish wedding in February 2015 became the subject of a heated global discussion on social media about whether it was black and blue or white and gold."

I personally think it leans more to the green side. I would bet if you put it near green it would look more blue and near blue it would look more green.

Lagoon would be the color it is called - IMO

I would call it teal.

But some teals run closer to blue and some to green.

This one, to my eye, runs closer to green.

Although the true color of teal is equal parts blue and green it depends on the saturation. And what the individuals minds eye perceives.

That is what I was taught with any "mixed" color in my color study classes in college.

There are a lot of home decor products offerred on QVC of this color that typically go by "Ocean Blue." I think it's teal green.

I agree with the others. It's my favorite color - teal! This swatch definitely leans to green IMHO!

Looks like a teal blue to me, also. I like that shade.

But, in the spirit of how it seems like everybody just has to change every-freaking-thing these days, I've also heard teal called 'teal green'. gack

It is teal but if I could only decide between or blue I said green both times. I don't really see blue.

There is teal blue and there is teal green - both colors exist, with the balance tilting to the respective colors.

The swatch looks like green teal to me, even between the blue swatches - in fact putting it between the blue swatches accentuates the green, to me.

My computer screen is terrible color-wise, however, although we can agree that the color is teal, I'm seeing more blue than green. On another computer I might see things differently.

I have seen teal that is more blue than green, but this swatch of teal definitely looks like teal green to my eyes.

Well.....if a QVC host was describing it.......now this color is teal.....vendor interrupts....no, it celadon.....host continues....but it can be taken for green in some light or blue in the evening.......Oy!!!
