How many ways do I hate Microsoft

I changed my search engine to Bing. I wanted to sign up for their rewards program. Tried to do that and had to sign in to my Microsoft account. I didn't even know I had an account, so I tried to create one. So I put in my email address and they said there already was an account with that email address. So I put in to get a code sent to my email so I could change my password. I did this and then got a message that my account has been temporarily suspended because someone may have used this email and didn't follow the rules. Then the message said to continue, they would send me a text to my phone for further instructions. My phone doesn't have text capabilities---it is just a landline. I went to Need Further Help. I typed in my email address and got sent to the page to contact us. Then, guess what, for someone to contact me I needed to get the code they will send to my phone. Drat, Drat, etc. Ridiculous--

And continuing withMicrosoft, what happens if I don't want to upgrade to Windows 10. Are they going to charge me if I don't do that before July 29th, the deadline for free installation? Everyone I know who has it, has problems. One of my friends said she didn't click on the download, but it downloaded automatically during the night. Now she lost her audio. One company had to call in a geek to fix their computers after they switched to Windows 10. Phooey on Microsoft. Sorry this is so long.

Check your settings on your computer and make sure you have it set to first ask for your permission for any updates. Also, don't leave your computer on when you're not using it (I can't believe some people even do this). I still get that pop-up box trying to talk me into Win 10, but I just close it out every day. It is annoying.....like Big Brother. Hopefully, after 7/29 they'll stop bugging us about it, but who knows? My laptop is over 6 years old and works just fine without Win 10. Whenever I decide to buy a new one.........then I'll be ready to deal with Win 10.

Windows 10 down loaded onto my computer while I was shopping at Costco! I figured I would just deal with it but after about a week I lost the start menu. Went to Microsoft store in mall and they fixed it. They also offered to take Windows 10 off if I wanted. Have you tried phoning the Microsoft store?

I installed Win 10 on my 6 year old Toshiba laptop, and I haven't had any problems.

Sure, it took a little getting used to, but so did this place when they changed it.

@geegerbee I did have to create a microsoft account, actually a while ago. I never sign into it and have no troubles doing stuff on my computer. I use Firefox browser. Perhaps you should try just x-ing out the screen for Microsoft account and see if you can't download Bing.

I do feel your pain but to be honest, you really need a cell phone. Just a cheap pay-as-you-go phone for situations like this. I actually like Win 10 but I have had it since Dec or Jan and I work from home most days, so I had not choice in the matter, I had to learn it and learn it fast. My computer updated to Win 10 without asking me and it took about 3 hours. It was a work day! After that there were updates that once again held my computer hostage for an hour or two with each update. Then everything was fine until two weeks ago. But this time, I was if I wanted to delay the update and by how many hours. So, chose to have it run overnight. Big surprise when I logged on. Everythig was different! So had had take a deep breath and just "play" until I figured it out. I'm still discovering new things about Win 10 and Acer support is very helpful. I didn't lose anything during any of the Win 10 installations or updates. Perhaps because my laptop is new. So, I like Win 10 but I hope that this is the last update for a long time. But I doubt it....

@geegerbee Sorry you had so many problems....Bing is owned by Microsoft .....I can't help you with Microsoft problem...

However, if you go to the ELECTRONICS section of the QVC Forum--there is a thread titled FIX FOR MICROSOFT FORCED WINDOWS 10 INSTALL. There is information on a simple tool you can add for free called GWX Control Panel. You can find more info about it in the thread. Good Luck.

It totally messed up my computer...I had to take my computer in and let them fix the mess downloading 10 did to my computer. Cost me over 500.00 dollars to get it all right.

But I can help you with how to stop Microsoft's from a forced install of their Windows 10. Go to the ELECTRONICS section of the QVC Forum--the title is FIX FOR MICROSOFT FORCED WINDOWS 10 INSTALL.

It has an option for you to install a simple add-on called GWX Control Panel. You can find more info about it in the thread.

Bing and Microsoft did not enter any partnership. Bing BELONGS to Microsoft and it is their search engine, like Google is for Chrome. Bing has been around for a very long time.

@itiswhatitis Thanks I stand corrected....I guess I was thinking of this...

In July 2009, Microsoft and Yahoo announced a deal in which Bing would power Yahoo Search. All Yahoo! Search global customers and partners made the transition by early 2012. The deal was altered in 2015, meaning Yahoo! was only required to use Bing for a "majority" of searches.

I have a Mac, and have been using Bing for several years I think. Works like a charm for me - much prefer it to Google, etc.

I have no problem with Microsoft. I realize many have a problem with them. I have helped many on the Electronic Forum over the years with computer issues(not Apple) who had problems more from the lack of computer knowledge than with their Windows operating system itself.

Nothing against anyone not very computer savvy, just stated the facts I have experienced over the years.

Wow! Did Microsoft charge you that? I made an appointment at their store in the local mall and they fixed my problem for free.

My computer slowed down and began exhibiting several problems...keyboard, auto downward scrolling, etc.

There is a GWX Control Panel program I've referenced in a FIX FOR FORCED MICROSOFT WINDOWS 10 INSTALL thread in Electronics. This would block all Win 10 future Updates from installing, as well as clear any current Win 10 downloads on your computer. HTH's

I've certainly run up against this in the past, @geegerbee , and I feel your pain!

Here's a link with some possible solutions for you. From what you've provided it looks like you'll need to update your Security Settings. I realize you can't get into your account right now, but there are several links at the bottom (including contacts) that may be helpful to get you there.

To answer your question on the Windows 10 upgrade install:

You have options. You can let MS install Win 10 to your computer.

You might as well get used to Windows 10. There won't be a Windows 11. Microsoft has gone from an operating system model to an ecosystem model. Around 2020 all support for other operating systems will stop and there will only be support for Windows 10. Updates and upgrades will all be done through Windows 10. Microsoft is now supporting multiple operating systems. This change will give them just one operating system to support which will reduce their costs. It's a smart move on their part.

OMGosh......It took me ten minutes just to be able to answer this thread.............Anyway, I've been waiting for another discussion re: MS.............If all of us would write to Apple to request a less expensive alternative to MS, we could all switch over to Apple at the end of the year, just before MS demands payment. What MS needs is stiff competition. And Apple would make millions/billions of dollars more, gaining MS customers.
