i keep getting requests from people to connect with them on Linked In. I do not even know what Linked In is exactly. I know someone told me it was more used in a business environment to help job seekers reach professional contacts in their field., that is all I know about it. I do not have a LinkedIn account nor do I want one. I already have a Facebook account which I seldom use. Most off the people who want me to,connect on LinkedIn are already Facebook friends. What is this LinkedIn? Why do I need it? What should I do about these invitations? isn't this entire thing going too far?

I got a those a couple of times a few weeks ago. Since I figured LinkedIn was business related, and since I'm retired, I ignored the requests. Despite the fact that I knew the people named. Crazy stuff.

It sounds like LinkedIn has no use for you (the description you wrote is accurate). Ignore the requests.

Linked in is like Facebook but it's business related. You don't post pictures other than one for your home page, and you have friends who invite you to connect in with you. You have to have a linked in page to get requests via their e'mail site.

I have gotten several requests for LinkedIn also. All of these people have my email address. If they want to keep up with me they can email me. I want nothing to do with any other sites.

Microsoft bought Linkedin and maybe this issue will be resolved.

LinkedIn is a professional networking media. It's more than just job seeking; it's networking with professional colleagues, peers and others with similar expertise. Over time it has had some similar features of social networking sites, such as Facebook, implemented, which has resulted in many people leaving, because it's nothing more than Facebook with the guise of professional networking. I, like many others, do keep my LinkedIn profile "strictly business" and use Facebook for social interaction.

I have ignored every invitation received. If I'm not mistaken, there was a recent hack into the LinkedIn network, within the last few months.

Also, what I find sort of objectionable is, you can sign up with a phony login to find people similar to classmates dot com.

Linked in can be extremely helpful to those trying to find new jobs. I know of several people who have landed job via contacts at linked in.

They can often connect with others if someone will connect with them who knows the person he/she wants to connect with.

It can be a valuable tool. Thank goodness there aren't multiple pictures on linked in and people posting daily selfies of themselves.

just ignore them, LinkedIn has a function that it will send invitations to people and probably it has not been turned off. Not a big deal and it's not a hacking situation I get them too

ETA; when my husband set his up I made sure to turn off the functions that looks at your address book to send out those emails

You're right. I've been on LinkedIN for a very long time. What it does is create relationships based on your area of expertise. The many people in one of your contacts puts you closer to those contacts as well. In other words, its one big networking site which proves to be wonderful for working professionals and everyone else in between.

I've heard of women being harassed on linkedin, but that was just a couple of people. It's very popular, and I've never heard anything else bad about it.

It's a job networking site for professionals. If you don't work, it has no relevance at all.

I signed up when I was working but never used the site or connected with anyone else I knew who was on it.

I still get ads on FB "do you know", etc. because there must be cross-reference, as with many sites. Just ignore it
