I sometimes shake my head when I think of all the things we have today that we consider 'necessary'. I think back to what my great grandparents had available to them, when they married in about 1905, and compare that with all we have in conveniences (or some people consider necessities) today.

Some of the things we don't have and never miss.

Ice maker in the fridge (no water or ice in the door either)

Dishwasher

Texting or internet on the cell phones

No 'i' anything. No ipad or iphone or ipod

Air conditioning in the house (and never had it in the car until my son was born in 1996)

DVR or any other way to record television

I'm sure there is more that other's responses will make me remember.

What things considered modern conveniences or modern necessities do you live without (either by choice or for financial reasons)?

I also have no air conditioning. The top floor of the house can get pretty hot during the summer at times, but at night the sea breeze (the ocean is right down the hill) sweeps in and makes sleeping comfortable. I might get another window AC unit, as I gave one away, but we don't have too many days that are unbearably hot during the summer.

I would never even think about an ice maker in the fridge.

I don't have a cell phone or a tablet, just a laptop and a regular phone.

I also don't have a microwave. I never wanted one. When my parents closed their business and retired, they gave me their microwave. It has since stopped working, but I haven't replaced it. I don't like the way microwaved food tastes usually, although vegetables in those plastic packages are good.

One thing I would like to get is a cappacchino maker. I had one that didn't function very well, as you had to froth the milk in an add-on arm.

Many of the base model cars from the 1980's didn't have air, and some of our used cars had air originally, but it broke years before we got them. Even with my husband being a mechanic, we couldn't afford the parts to fix it, and did without back then. We often buy a very base model brand new car now, but then drive it for at least a decade, often much longer.

We don't use a dvr because there isn't much on tv that we think is worth recording. But that's just us. I accept conveniences gratefully when they improve our lives. I recall being so miserably hot in boiling and humid St. Louis summers when I was a toddler before we got air conditioning. That weather KILLED people, so I'm happy AC became available. I am glad to keep in close touch with beloved friends and relatives thanks first to the computer and then my iPad and grateful that, as a history lover, I can look up info and great videos and documentaries online now that I quit work and have time. Can't imagine life without a microwave. Enjoy satellite radio in the car so I can listen to CNN to pass the time on the road. Love having an ice maker, too. No complaints. If it works for you, use it.

Still have a landline but do use cell phones.

All our cars have A/C as it's unbearable for those with respiratory problems not to have A/C either in car or home when it is hot and humid.

An I Pad has made it a lot easier to sit anywhere in the house and be on a computer for the Internet.

I've done exactly the same things with my cars, @Mominohio. I even drive a stick shift because I was too cheap to pay for an automatic transmission for my Volkswagen years ago. Since then, I've gotten used to them. They perform far better on ice than cars with automatic transmissions. Many times you just downshift instead of hitting the breaks, which helps you to control the car after a blizzard. I had to rent a car not too long ago when my car was in the shop and all they had were automatics. I'm surprised they let me take it off the lot after they saw me trying to drive the automatic. I was lurching all around the lot for a while and was still very unsteady when I got on the road. After a couple of days, it went smoothly.

@Ms X

You are cracking me up! I drive a standard too. And I could kill my husband, who swore we'd get better mileage with it, and we DON'T! I have always been able to drive a standard, and that Chevy I mentioned was one. Then I had a van I loved for about a decade that was automatic, and got used to it, and loved it. When we bought our newest car (a 2005!) he talked me into a standard again. I have bad knees, and I'm to the point of hating that thing.

You are right though, I love it in the ice and snow, for controlling especially downhill speed, but hate getting started from a complete stop in the middle of a steep icy hill.

I often drive my mom around in her car (automatic) and I find myself almost punching a hole in her floor looking for the clutch!

I live in the year 2016 and do not find it more noble not to utilize the advances in science and technology that are available. I have always preferred to look forward rather than be complacent with the status quo.
