Retiring - Again!

I retired two years ago, and in May went back to my old firm 4 hours, 2 days a week. They have recently decided to move offices which will be much farther away. I have thought long and hard on it - it has been nice being around people again and I've been using the x-tra money to help pay off a home improvement loan. I've been flip-flopping on whether to quit or keep working. This may sound weird, but I asked for a sign for what my decision should be. Last night I was startled awake by a voice that said "You're not going" - that's all I heard. Then today, my oldest dog who just turned 15 and who is having real problems with her back legs getting around, fell off the back stairs trying to come up the stairs. It just made me that much stronger in my feeling I'm doing the right thing by quitting and staying home with my sweet girl. So at the end of July, it's back to retirement!

@Kachina624 - No, I'm sure they won't be happy with my decision. I kick a lot of work out in those eight hours and save them from having to hire anothe secretary - but I have to do what's right for me. I'll miss working those few hours- just wish they weren't moving the office so far away.

I worked per diem for 3 years after I retired. The first time I got a great party, and when I decided to hang it up for good,some of my co- workers threw a pot luck, and gave me some gag gifts. My favorite was a framed picture of my boss, ( who I disliked , really disliked). We all laughed so hard, and it was so much fun. When my co-worker retired a few months later, they gave her a locket, with the boss's picture in it. He is not well liked, LOL.

To me, one either retired or they did not. I don't care how many hours I worked for my company after I said, I retired! I either did or I did not, and in my case, I retired in 1991, and have never considered myself anything other than being retired.

Did I do other things I consider "work"? Of course, but never even remotely comparable to work from which I retired. I could make other analogies, but they would be poofed.

Just my opinion and I am sticking with it.

You are wise. I have always believed in signs and, like a lot of people, gave a lifetime of stories of having been guided to do this. The signs are there, whether we see them or not. You were looking and were open to guidance, and you saw the sign. I hope you enjoy a long and healthy retirement. I walked away from a successful career ten years ago and never looked back. I thought I might miss it. I didn't! Wishing the same for you.

I've been retired 18 months and I am quite busy with home projects, traveling, volunteering, and resting. Sometimes I miss socialization but not the people. LOL. I will get a little p/t job with time but I don't want to drive too far either.

It's hard for some people to make that transition from "working" to "retired" and you never know how you're going to feel about it until you do retire. It's wonderful that you got to keep working for them but I totally get your not wanting a long commute, that alone can be a deal breaker. I quit my job when my children were in grade school and middle school and when my youngest went to college I wanted to get a "fun" part time job, which I did but as time goes on a job is a job, even a "fun" one and now I'm trying to make that decision on what to do and it's hard because I do love the social interaction with some of the people I work with and even have made some treasured "life long" friends. My DH has had a wonderful 40 year career and is also having a hard time trying to make that decision since he loves what he does. Congratulations to you for retiring again! Good luck!
