Helpful Bra Sizing Tips That I Discovered

Ladies, I recently did a ton of research on bra sizing. I can't point to one site, because I probably checked out every site and article that I could find online. Anyway, these are some good points that I learned:

1. Most of you probably already know that you do not wear the same size bra in every brand.

2. Different brand bras want you to measure differently...some measure above the bre@st and some measure below the bre@st for cup size. You can actually measure a different cup size because of this.

3. The density of your breast will affect the fit of your bra. Jockey makes a bra fit cup with 10 plastic cups that you can use to measure the "volume" of your breast. The kit costs $20; however, they will apply that $20 to the first bra you purchase from them. Unfortunately, they only sell four bras.

4. Probably the most helpful tip for me (full breasted), was that for each increase in cup size (e.g. from C to D), you can generally go down one band size (e.g. from 40 to 38). I was needing a 40-D and learned that I can wear a 36-DDD...and it fits great! It actually does a much better job of separating my bre@sts, and the middle of the bra lies right at my sternum instead of floating above my sternum. The elastic band in back is right where it should be...does not ride up. Also, no "double bubble" (to quote the Breezies' lady. More importantly, I look much better in that size.

5. I learned that a DDD cup is equal to a F cup, and DDDD is equal to a G cup. I had never heard of a G cup, but I found them online, and Kohl's actually carries a few. I live in a small city and have very few places to shop for clothing.

Hope some of these tips help a little in that frustrating task of finding the correct bra size...and one that makes you look good.

This is helpful, thanks! Quite unexpectedly, I am growing in this area post-menopause, despite no weight gain elsewhere. I find it disturbing and uncomfortable (my gyno says there is no reason to be alarmed medically) and am having a lot of trouble finding bras to fit after being the same size for most of my adult life. I guess it's back to the fitting room for me . . . .

I just wish I could find A BRA that comes close to my size....30dd. I aways have to get the 32 altered to fit me. Real drag.

@SilleeMee - have you tried Soma????? Oh darn....I just went to the site and smallest is a 32.......surprising....there are a lot of petite women with large cup sizes in my neck of the woods (OC).....friends of mine swear by this brand.....hmmmm...

MickD, no I have not. But I just looked at their site and they don't carry 30s either. I really don't think they exist.

@SilleeMee There are many places on line that sell 30DD's. I just checked herroom dot com, and they have them.

@Yardlie Thanks for the info and tips. I have yet to find a really comfortable bra. I've been fitted and I've spent a lot. Some are more comfortable than others, but I can't say ANY of them are really comfortable. (I'm a 40 DD.) It's the first thing I take off when I get home.

Two more things I'd like to add .....

If you google "bra size calculator", several will come up. When you enter your measurements, the bra sizes won't all be the same.

Also, not every "bra fitter" knows what the heck they are doing. (don't get me started on the idiot I dealt with!)

We hear it thrown around that 80% of women are wearing the wrong bra size. Frankly, with all the conflicting information out there, I'm really impressed that 20% of women were able to get it right! lol

I did a 2-second Google search....tons of places carry 30DD. Wacoal popped up first. Love that brand! Well worth the $.

A fitting tip I learned long ago is,

the straps should be there for 'decoration only."

IOW, no weigh should be on the shoulders.

You should be able to slip the straps off and

the breasts should still be well supported without sag.

So true! A couple,of years ago I went to Nordstroms, Macy's and Lord & Taylor the same day. At each store I had a,"professional" fitting from a certified bra fitter. Yup, I was told three different sizes. These people are a joke!

I'm not surprised!

A Nordstrom fitter (the idiot) decided what size I was a went out & brought back a few to try. They were so tight that I couldn't fully exhale, and I told her this was definitely the wrong size .... and very uncomfortable! Well, she told me that I WAS WRONG .... and was just one of those women who couldn't be pleased!

To this day, I still regret not reporting her. What a snippy salesperson! Funny thing is, the following week I was in a Macy's lingerie dept dressing room, and heard a woman telling her friend that she had a very bad experience with the fitter at Nordstroms!

My experience has been different.

I am a proud member of the itty bitty club. Haven't worn a bra since 1968. Then last year the "twins" decided to take a trip south & never returned "home."

I discovered a bra speciality shop near my home & went there to get fitted since I had no clue what size bra I wore.

I discovered what worked for me regarding fit & comfort were bras that snapped in the front & no underwire. I had cleavage!!!!

The twins returned home. I can wear any brand as long as the bra snapped in the front. I perfer the boyfriend bras because they make feel I am not wearing a bra. Perfection when it comes to comfort & perkyness for us itty bitty club members.

I am 65 (66 next week) yrs young.

I asked the same question. Sales clerk told me that I hadn't realized bras now have "names" since the 60's.
