IF YOU DO NOT WANT THE WINDOWS 10 FORCED INSTALL...

For anyone interested in preventing the forced install of Windows 10 for whatever reason...I posted a thread in the Electronics section awhile ago, FIX FOR FORCED WINDOWS 10 INSTALL" to share a GWX Control Program that will block the updates for the install. The GWX Program is presented and explained in my opening post there. HTH's

If Windows 10 has installed on your computer already, you'll need to uninstall it first. That is accomplished at the Start Menu in Windows 10, and you have 30 days to do so. Once you uninstall Win 10, I also suggest you use a cleaner (CC Cleaner freebie is what I used) and also run the Register cleaner (within CC Cleaner)as MS leaves behind files that can slow down your computer.

This aggressive approach by MS has been known for awhile and some of us have been dealing with it longer than others. July 29th is the cutoff date for the free version of Win 10 so hopefully when a price tag is added this annoying, aggressive behavior can stop.

For what it's worth, I use a Dell desk-top only a couple of years old, and my Windows 8 system slowly started breaking down several months ago. It was so slow and certain things were difficult to get going.

I did not want to change but it was such a hassle, I had my daughter install Windows 10 for me. All of the problems immediately disappeared and I've had no problems with Windows 10.

Yes I learned my lesson on this one, I upgraded and had it taken out the next day

I noticed that when I go to IE there is a message asking me if I want it, I just x it out and it goes away.

This obviously is not for you, @Noel7 , since you've already upgraded and are satisfied.

Many of us are not in the same boat for various reasons. This little program just gives an additional option.

I'm not trying to talk anyone into it, I totally understand how people feel, I was there for a long time

Just relaying my experience that it wasn't as bad as I'd feared once I was forced to try it. And I am very aware that might not be true for others.

Hi Noel! I'm so glad that it went well for your computer/s. I just decided that i didn't want to do it because I was so afraid that many of my programs would not be compatible, plus I know that SOME people have had problems.

That's not to include those who just didn't like the changes or anything, of course. But there are some incompatibilities.

I will definitely wait until I need to purchase a new computer to try Win10 or, hopefully, my two Win7 and two Win8.1 computers will outlive me!! That would be my ideal scenario.

If it's true that clicking on the red X causes W10 to install, isn't that fraudulent? Or illegal. Or something similar. How do folks 'get away' with this stuff? If it were you or me, 'Look out'. p.s. My notice didn't have a 'cancel' option. Just a postponement. Maybe they added a 'cancel' option lately. I X'd mine, so we'll see what happens.......

You probably couldn't prove it, though. That's probably how they get around that.

Who has been "forced" to install it? I got a message saying it would be installed on a certain date & time but that message also gave me the opportunity to change that time, date, and even to cancel the scheduled install. That message didn't "force" me to do anything.

I used that word in relaying my experience. Gradually, bit by bit, I started having problems with Windows 8. Especially linking to various sites I often used. And it kept getting slower and slower. Several attempts to fix it failed. Apparently I wasn't the only one that happened to.

No one held a gun to my head, mine was not a literal use of the word.

The good news is that everything started working after I begrudgingly switched.

I got the message too that it was scheduled, but it also gave me postponement options, new date/time for me, or cancellation option. I postponed it twice, thinking about it, backing up my files and checking to make sure all the updates had been installed so it would work properly, then I scheduled it and it has been grand.

Everything went perfectly, I had to choose some default stuff (home page, browser) and that worked too. Everything was easy to find and use. I've had all the Windows over the years, love this one. My HP laptop is 2 years old and works great so I wasn't afraid of trying to recombobulate old stuff.

You're fortunate, @scotnovel . MS is now installing Win 10 without permission of the user via Updates. There's another active thread here "auto upload of windows 10" where many posters are experiencing this.
