Do you trust the coin counting machines?

Maybe not now.......

NBC “Today” tested the popular free service back in early April, finding that Penny Arcades in five locations miscounted $300 packets of coins. In one spot the machine’s receipt tallied just $256.90—nearly 15% less than the $300 deposited. The four other locations offered closer totals, all within $4 of the correct amount, but no error was in the customer’s favor.

That is scary! I take my accumulated coins to my bank, and have always trusted their number. Guess I will be counting, grossly, ahead of time now. Ugh.

And on top of that, some places charge 7% or more for the service - that's another $21 or more on your $300.

I used to get wrappers and roll coins; now I try to use up as much as possible before I give in and dump them in to the machine at my credit union.

No, I do not trust coin counting machines.

They want a fee, and I don't want an Amazon gift card.

I want to spend my money the way that I want.

It isn't that hard to count and roll the coins myself, and to take them to my bank, and deposit them in to my account.

That is your OPINION -- my OPINION is that it is well worth the 7% to not have to do all that counting and wrapping. I trust the machines.

We save coin to use as a tip when we go out to eat. Yep, they get all change but we make sure it's all quarters. When I tip fast food I take the smaller denominations. Yes, I tip fast food.

I take my coins to the bank. They don't charge a fee, and I don't have to wrap them or anything. I might only have $30 or $40 at one time - I leave a bowl in the closet so my husband can deposit his change in there.

I head for the Coinstair machine whenever my purse gets too heavy. The machine I use is in my grocery store. You can turn the voucher into cash there or just apply toward grocery bill. I am happy to give them 7% so I do not have to roll the coins, drive to the bank and wait in line! That would be a big waste of my time.

I still love counting and rolling my change...it was my job as a child...my dad paid me...kept me out of my parents' way for quite a while...win win!

I don't know if I trust them but I use them. I no longer collect change like I use to but I am not going to take the time to roll it. My bank has a machine and I just use that one now. Amazon was a great choice but I don't want a credit with them unless I know there is something I need to buy from them.

A few years ago, I rolled $100 - $200 of change from the jar on my dresser. Took it to my bank, only to find they didn't accept rolled coin from customers anymore. I had to use their machine in the lobby. I was disgusted, and the teller helped me unwrap the coins and dump them in the hopper. The machine count was exactly the same as my count, to the penny.

Having said that, I don't trust the machine. I'd rather roll the coins myself. And the bank has since gotten rid of its machine, in view of their recent negative publicity.

Twice in the last year, I've taken coins to CoinStar, and out of curiosity, I counted them myself first. Both times, the machine counted it correctly to the penny. Yes, they take 7-10%, but it's worth it to me not to have to roll them. Now that I know the machine counts correctly, I won't count myself next time.
