Listeria Frozen Food Recall

This could become a major mess with thousands of fruits and vegetables being affected. One person has died, several hospitalized and no one as a clue as to the source.

Thanks for the alert! I've been using canned fruits and vegetables for years and years, mainly because there wasn't enough room to keep extra frozen items in freezer. I guess I initally was and have been thinking that canned items are somewhat cooked/steamed/processed/whatever before they are canned, which might be more safe. (?) (Well, who knows....)

I shop at BJ's and Trader Joe's. Last week I returned all of my frozen veggies to Trader Joe's for a refund and today in the mail I received a letter from BJ's asking me to return the things that I had purchased there that could be affected for a refund. I decided to be proactive and take this potential threat seriously.

It's very frightening, especially since we totally depend on our food sources to be safe.

Canned foods are usually safe unless they've been dented in some way, which can (but not always) create a microscopic hole in the can where air can get into it and might cause the content to become spoiled)..... always check your cans by feeling them for dents before buying them.

Frozen items we have to take a leap of faith that they have been processed properly.

Also restaurants can be sources and the poor customers have no idea what happened.... or think it's flu.

DH and I ate at a local Mexican restaurant and 6 hours later I vomited violently until my stomach was totally emply. Whoa that was hard... and that meal was all I had since the day before. DH doesn't vomit.... but he got really sick for about 5 days.... couldn't eat, had bathroom difficulties. We are ~absolutely~ convinced it was the lunch we had there. We mentioned it to them and they immediately thought it was from something/somewhere else, so it's so difficult to pinpoint.

We've not been back.....

This is rather old news at this point, although more foods might be included than before. No one single brand is affected, because the Pasco, Washington, food processor where the problem originated sells to many different well-known grocery store chains under many different brands---20-plus pages of frozen goods and brand names are listed at sites ranging from FDA.gov to costco.com/recalls.

The original discussion of this--in early May-- on the QVC Recipe forum can be found by looking back to posts from May 5 on the topic of food recalls.

Not a pleasant topic, and I wish I could remember to return one package of frozen vegetables that my local grocery store called about and asked me to return. Keep forgetting until I open the freezer and see it sitting there.

Costco also alerted me with a recorded message, but I have yet to think of an item I purchased there in the past year that might be affected. If anything was affected that I did buy.........well, it has long since been eaten, and no one in our house is dead yet.

I went to Kroger today, and they printed on my receipt a recall warning specific to products I'd purchased in the past Including some meals (like Tai Pei chicken fried rice). Scared me to see that I'd purchased several things on the list and I've already eaten it... I've been sick a few times, but there is no way to know whether or not it was the recalled food I ate.

I suppose this is one benefit to using the store loyalty cards. I didn't ike stores being able to track what I buy. But now I see one way this can benefit me - they were able to tell me exactly what I bought that was affected.

i had mentioned on the other food recall post that i had four bags of vegetables that i had returned to schwans two weeks ago.....one bag had been half used already. they gave me a full credit for all of the bags and i just found another bag of corn that i will return on my next delivery date. schwans is good about calling and emailing product recall notices.

What is even more scary than the problems lurking in our food supply is that, apparently, many people have not known about this "old recall news".

I just heard a story about it yesterday on the Wash DC-area all-news radio station..........all I could think was, WHERE have you been????

People have been eating this stuff for weeks or months without having a clue.

There were over 400 products, under 40 different brand names, not just one brand.

I love my local Ralph's/Kroger store......got the robo-call about the recall and returned a unopened bag of veg and got the almost 5 dollar refund.....

@novamc1Right - this was old news to me, too! I got my BJ's robocall a couple of weeks ago for frozen veggies that I had used about 2 months ago. BJ's handled it very well. In addition to the earlier robocall, BJ's sent written notices last week. After the robocall, I checked in with the customer service desk at my local BJ's and they gave me a refund after checking their system using my membership number. I didn't need to show them a receipt or to return any unused portion of the product. The whole process was very easy.

You're in New Mexico, too, so you could get a call. I've already heard from Costco and Smith's (Kroger) that I shouldn't eat those frozen organic veggies I purchased. Too late -- they've been consumed.

Every day you hear eat your fruits and vegetables. Well if you buy them in the store fresh you have to worry about pesticides. If you buy them frozen you have to worry about some kind of bacteria. Then we have meat and chicken have hormones in it. I'm too old to buy a farm and start from scratch.
