Hosts Do Make A Difference

I know that as a rule on this board, if someone says they don't like a particular host, there is always the response to "change the channel." Of course, this is probably the option most people choose -- changing the channel. However, I've noticed something in the past few months for myself. There are several hosts I just can't watch, and the number seems to be increasing. Because of this, I do change the channel a lot, and frankly, I don't watch nearly as much QVC as I used to watch.

For me, this changing the channel has also changed my shopping habits with QVC. I find I am not purchasing nearly as much as I used to purchase -- all because I don't enjoy watching so many of the hosts. While I never have watched QVC or bought anything strictly "because" of one host or another, I realize that when I was actually watching (and enjoying) QVC more, I was much more likely to purchase items. If I'm not watching, I'm not seeing what's being offered so I'm not tempted. And when I'm not being tempted, I don't even seem to go to QVC.com as much as I did.

Anyone else feel this way?

Some hosts on Q are unwatchable but in all fairness so is programming.

Beds, vacumns, perricone and philosophy are some front runners.

I'm pretty sure everyone who shops or has ever shopped on a regular basis feels that way....lol I actually don't watch much QVC TV at all anymore, it just seems so old fashioned now and so limited, much of what QVC sells is not shown on tv. But I am on Qvc.com frequently and often throughout the day. I look, I search, I browse and I buy stuff. I make 2-3 purchases a week. Things I would not have bought if I didn't spend so much time on this board. It was the same with QVC tv, back in the day, especially my sahm days, I tuned in a lot. I did not buy from hosts I didn't care for but that's because I never watched their shows. I still wonder why people will complain about a host or vendor.......and then watch every second of every program that host or vendor is on....lol We watch the shows and hosts/vendors we lke and we buy. If we don't want to buy stuff....we stopped watching or stop cruising around QVC.com. We can't buy what we don't see.

No.

I almost never watch QVC and do most of my shopping online, like it's any other store. There are some shows I usually record (Friday Night Beauty, organizing/gadget shows, Philosophy or Dooney shows) and watch on Fast Forward. I rarely just sit down and watch and I don't leave it on in the background, either.

I did watch Albany and Laura Geller for a few minutes last week, but that was about it. I really like Albany and watched because she was a hoot.

And yes, I'd say hosts do make a difference, but one person's favorite host is another's least favorite. QVC will never find hosts that please everyone because there is no human alive who pleases everyone. I really like Albany and a lot of people don't like her. I don't like Mary Beth a lot of people love her. And that's why change the channel is always going to be the answer. You can't control who hosts shows, but you can control what's on your TV.

I think the tv shopping thing is going to be a thing of the past someday.People can buy anything online,compare prices and return what doesn't work.you don't need to wait for a shopping Chanel to do a presentation and sit through it.There is so much repetition on the channels to keep their costs down so it isn't as if they launch the newest and greatest anymore.The shopping channels want us to bond with the hosts to keep our loyalty but it is becoming more difficult to get loyalty....we all seem to have hosts to dislike and therefore not watch.

There's only one host I immediately cannot watch; there are others that morph the show into something very tiresome or irritating to me, and I turn or mute. But for the most part, I'm fine with the hosts when I do watch.

What I cannot watch are presentations for mattresses, laptops, vacuum cleaners, age-defying ["I promise you results!"] skin care products, or Nutri System (perhaps I should actually watch that one). Other than that, the hosts don't bother me to the extent of being bothered.

I'm right there with you. I rarely watch QVC anymore. There are some very good hosts - even a few of the new ones (Katie for sure). But I just am not going to waste my time watching hosts and vendors who behave in a childish or stupid way - no high kicks, no booty shaking, no dancing, no stupid faces, etc. I enjoy Carolyn when she's on - always professional and pleasant. I don't watch those who spend their time discussing their families, even though I am sure they do it from pride, etc. I just don't want to spend my precious time here on earth watching something (or someone) who annoys me with siliness, gimmicks or personal stories. TV personalities are not my friends or relatives - they're sales people. Nothing more.

@12andcountingI don't think you're wrong that the less you watch, the less you buy. However, I think that's not all bad. There's more reason than just the hosts that you're "agreeing" not to buy - unless you tell us that you're spending the same amounts you used to spend at QVC elsewhere.

Generally speaking, I spend less now at QVC than I used to, but that has nothing to bo with which hosts are on. I just quit shopping here and everywhere else unless I know I want or need something. I went through a period of over-shopping, but I no longer give QVC the power to tempt me, but I also stopped walking into my local mall myriad times a month. I was coming home with goodies nearly every trip - just because they were there and I could.

I still shop here, I still shop elsewhere, but I am so much more in control now than I was.

As for expecting to like every host? I think that's impossible. Besides, we'd never agree which QVC should keep and which should go. Same with vendors. We all want different people and personalities and different things. My opinion and I'm sticking to it.

If there is an item that I want to purchase, I try and wait for a host who is more professional and pleasing to me to be demonstrating the item, and then I'll place my order. My guess is that any orders placed during a particular host's air time, that host will get credit for the sales. So, in other words, I'd rather give the sale to certain hosts over others.

I am sure that QVC knows this too and this is the reason that they have hosts with very different personalities to attract different customers. If hosts not do what company inspect them to do they will be out next minute. Since they working I guess they are ok.

Yes, while I still buy items on QVC, I hardly ever watch anymore. I used to have it on in the background much of the time and this would lead to many impulse purchases, LOL! Whoever they are aiming their sales techniques at, it is not me, and that's ok, there are many places to shop.

At some point, the hosts were instructed to hyperventilate. That's the point at which they (almost) all became annoying to me and I stopped watching....and therefore stopped purchasing. However, it must be working or this practice would have stopped. Besides, I'm sure there are thousands of new viewers every day to whom this tv shopping experience is new and exciting. They are not yet annoyed by the hyperventilation or any other policy we may find annoying. lol

I completely agree, Millie. I guess it's just that the majority of the hosts have become unwatchable for me. Now it's just not as "easy" to make those impulse buys when I'm not watching so much. And that's certainly not a bad thing.

I have never watched QVC constantly! I check the program guide every day and just watch the shows that I am interested in! If I am interested in the show I really don't care who the host is! They do all have their own style!

So very well put. I totally agree. If I can't see it, because I'm not watching I can't want or need it. I save money and reduce clutter in my house. My husband will be happier especially paying the charge bill.

I have to agree with you......there are 4 hosts i cannot watch and turn the TV every time.........and i only watch the particular shows i am interested in .......in the old days i would have QVC on in the background while i did other things and would end up purchasing more...but with quite a few of the hosts on these days i just turn the channel altogether....don;t have the patience to listen to them.

I never watch the Q. At the end of the day, before I turn off my computer, I will scan the day's shows and see if anything interests me. I will click on the show and look at the items. I sometimes purchase an item here or there. I used to buy a lot of work clothes on the Q, but they don't even carry those brands anymore. That was about 10 years ago. They just vanished. I do not watch TV during the day, and only about an hour or so in the evening. I am out with friends, running errands, etc.

@Perkup Couldn't agree more. I rarely watch the Q channel. I do Q checks, but do not stay on the channel. I don't want nor need a new best friend in a QVC host. Family stories, vacation reports, religious sentiments or cute/silly gimmicks have never persuaded me to purchase any Q product.
