Last Night This Bothered Me While Watching

I was watching the Correspondents' Dinner coverage last night. I thought it was fun to watch people walk in at the beginning.

Then I saw Will Smith and Jada Smith walk in. Jada was just gushing for the camera as if she was the biggest celebrity in the world. It was sickening to watch.

What bothered me more was the press were taking her picture like she was a goddess, but right behind her stood Gabby Giffords just leaning against the wall watching her, totally unnoticed by the press. Maybe I missed Gabby's entrance (and I'm sure she didn't mug the camera), but the irony of watching Jada stand there as if she was so important and Gabby off to the side just watching her politely. I can only imagine what Gabby was thinking watching this woman strut for the camera.

Sorry, just needed to vent that. Why does this event always turn into a celebrity fest? We never even know the names of the quality press reporters that are there. They are overshadowed by Candace Cameron and Kendall Jenner. Jenner was called out by the President, and I'm sure she'll "tweet" that for days. Yet, she probably couldn't name one person sitting on that dais last night.

I got sick and tired of both Will and Jada a loooong time ago. IMO she's a has-been.

Because the so called 'celebrities' are self-important in their eyes. They all think that it's all about them. They should know how un-important they really are and how ridiculous they look.

It's once a year, and the event raises scholarship money.

I watched the commentary on C-SPAN. They said the celebrity invitees mostly started in the '80s, and has grown since then.

They are there for the paps and interest. Just having it for reporters and important people would not generate excitement. Been done for years and will always be done. Exposure, roasting and having fun. It is and has been been what it is.

I think it's because Americans, by and large, are obsessed with celebrity. Who cares about another politician, even if it's Gabby -- let's go gaga over Hollywood royalty.

Well, I knew what happens at this particular dinner, so you know what? I didn't watch. I thought most people knew what it was.

It's also a shame that unless you're watching C-SPAN, none of the other channels even show the kids being recognized for their scholarships.

I watch it on C-SPAN so I can see them and see their excitement of being there. To me, they are the celebrities, they deserve to be honored and acknowledged. Yet, our media just gushes over the rich and famous.

I did enjoy the President's segment and loved Mrs. O's dress.

We celebrate them in our areas and they get the chance to be a part of history. They will remember it for the rest of their lives. Plus ... they got to mingle with "stars".

I agree, @Preds. And the fact remains that the media promotes what viewers watch, or what readers read. If none of us paid attention, they'd change the focus. I'm no PR expert, but they do say all the mentions on the internet are beneficial, whether supportive or critical ("no such thing as 'bad ink'")... and here we are mentioning them, talking about them, adding more to their "trending" on the internet.

"The dinner is paid for by tickets bought by the people attending the dinner, most are actually purchased by corporations and given to their employees and guests. The dinner is also a fund raiser for scholarships for journalism students."

I thought the "comedian" who followed the President crossed the line with his "comedy" and wasn't funny at all! He made a lot of people uncomfortable--you could tell by their faces.

I didn't enjoy much of his comedy last night but this event is known for its edginess. His late night show is better.
