They used to be fun!

I used to like them, heck I used to love them, but not anymore. I know the saying its better to be above ground but birthdays are no fun anymore! No fun games to play like running with an egg on a spoon to the finish line or red rover, red rover.Im grateful to be alive but I dread another candle on that delicious cake!

@hsawaknow You were lucky to have birthday parties. As a person who's birthday is on Christmas I never got to experience one growing up.

Birthdays were never special to me so I stopped thinking about them a long time ago. I guess I'm just proud to add another one on.

How sad! I would've gone out of my way if someone in my family had a birthday on Christmas--to make the day as special for them as though it was any other day of the year!

My bd isn't on christmas, but I can totally relate! The only birthday party I had was when I was 12. My best friend and her mother, who lived across the street from us (her mother was kind of motherly toward me, as she knew what a horrible mother I had), held a bd party for me and I was so excited.

Well, there I went and ruined it by looking forward to it because at that point my evil mother creature thing wouldn't let me go. I felt just as badly for them (my friend and her mother) because they went to all that trouble and caring. It was so horribly rude and unforgivable that I was not allowed to go.

I'm not whining. I got over it. But I can relate to never having a bd party and it's just one of those irksome little things that sticks with you.

My DH tries but the fact is birthdays have not been the same since my parents died. My Mom knew how to make a cake special.And she always tried extra hard for my birthday because it is right after Christmas so I didn't get a party either. However she always made it special anyway. Even as a working adult, I always took off on my birthday and did what I wanted to do for the day.

@katte***My precious DIL's birthday is Dec 15 and she never had a party! Ever since DS decided she was "the one" and brought her home, we have a full scale birthday party with a special dinner, a bakery cake with flowers (not Christmas), candles, and gifts! She cries, bless her!

I'm so sorry. I don't know you, of course, but judging by your posts, you grew up to be a nice person, despite your childhood. That's really commendable.

I was a latchkey kid and despite that my folks were understandably tired to throw parties, one year they surprised me and threw a huge one with all my friends at the local ice skating rink complete with beautifully wrapped presents and a huge cake. My SO replicated that one year, so much fun with parents there too!!

@Lucky Charm I remember playing Red Rover as a kid! As I recall there were two equal lines of kids holding hands facing each other. Then one kid in one of the lines would call - Red Rover Red Rover send (name of kid) right over. Then the kid named would run from his line and try to break through the opposing team's line. If the kid broke through the line, he/she could take another kid from the opposing team's line back to his or her line. If they didn't break through they had to stay with the opposing team.

I think I may have had a bd party at least once or twice when I was a kid. We had a big family and there was no way my Mother could cope with birthday parties with any sort of regularity. I think bd parties are important for kids idea of their self worth. Even though my parents couldn't manage bd parties for us, we kids make sure our own children and spouses have parties every year. My son is 32 and still delights in his special day and that makes mine.

Kachina - Yes, she is/was (not sure which applies at this time) a piece of work. As I figured out many years later, she was so filled with self-loathing and I guess it made sense to her to manifest her own self-loathing onto me. Had she not done so many horrible, cruel things to me I would feel sorry for her. But I don't.
