Update: Friends Bought Home On Auction Network

Not a lot of comments on my thread a couple of weeks ago, but someone ask to let them know how it turned out.

Turns out the home did not pass the inspections. Pretty much everything the Auction Network proclaimed about the home was false information. My friends are now in the process of getting back their 20% down. I sure hope that goes well!

My BF is furious with her husband because, as I suspected from the beginning, he pushed this thing on her and she agreed just to keep the peace. They still want to retire to FL but they have learned a valuable lesson. I still can't believe he was that gullible to buy a home off TV!

The inspector called the house "a pig with lipstick".

Thanks for the update @Tabbycat. I've wondered how that went. Now we know how legit those auction sites are. Please encourage them to get a rental and spend the summer there before committing to a permanent home.

I would be furious, too. OTOH, there is no way in he## that I would agree to that to keep the peace! I might agree to go to Applebee's instead of Texas Roadhouse, or to buy the blue Mustang instead of the red to keep the peace, but I draw the line on buying a house off the TV!!

I hope they get their $$ back without too much trouble.

I remember that thread @Tabbycat, I commented on it. I am glad you updated us because I was wondering what ever became of that. Wow, I hope they will have no problem getting their downpayment back.

A pig with lipstick, that is pretty bad.

I can't imagine going along with my husband wanting to buy a HOUSE to keep the peace. I hope this gave her a wakeup call to speak up. I can see not wanting to be a nagging wife, questioning every purchase but when you are buying a house you should never go along with it to keep the peace if it isn't what you want or are comfortable with. Is he the type of guy that is impossible to live with if he doesn't get his way all the time? I could never live with that.

If I am remembering correctly, they don't even live in FL do they? I don't understand wanting to move to a place especially if it isn't for a job but retiring, that you have never been to.

If I wanted to move to a city to live that I hadn't been to before, I would rent for the first year or so, so you could get the lay of the land and find out what areas you truly like then you are more knowledgeable as to what area you want your house to be and what amenities it is near. That is important to daily living.

I hope they get their money back. I hope the lawyer fees don't end up costing more. Buying a home off TV, is not a good idea.

I don't want to air their business on a public forum, but she told me she did not want to buy their retirement home this way.

She lived in Florida when she was a little girl. She has fond memories. They are tired of shoveling snow all winter and the cooler climate. And they both love the heat of summer. They are about 15 hours North of Ocala area. The last time she was in Florida was in the mid 1980's ( we both were still single then ) when she and I went down there on holiday!! Things change in that amount of time!

Her DH has not been well for several months. She has been half crazy dealing with all this and she just agreed because this is what he wanted.

It sounds like the house is in really bad condition. The contractor said the pool leaks, the electrical is shot, among several other things.

Yes, she has always gone along with everything he wants. I have to stay out of their business ... well, because it's none of mine. I now live 6 hours south of them and she came down here when DH and I were house hunting. We rented a house for 6 months until we found what we wanted. That's how she wanted to do things, too.

She told me the other day she is "done" going along with everything he says, but time will tell .... she always has before. I surely hope so. I've tried for years to convince her to!!

I just hope and pray it doesn't cost them the price of a new home to get their money back!

I don't know ANYONE who would buy a house without seeing it. I seriously doubt they would get their money back.

Why would they have to put 20% down? A good faith deposit is what we did first. That was around 5,000. Then the home inspection, and finally the loan.

What a DUMB idea -- buying a house from an infomercial on tv!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's like people buying these worthless products from infomercials and most are junk.Unfortunately, they put down a lot of money --- and I wish them the best collecting it.

Thanks for the update. As I said I do watch that channel a lot. There are transactions that fall through and then the Auction Network puts the properties up for bid again. What I don't know is under what terms money is refunded.

They require 10% down when you win the property and then the balance is due in 3 weeks. (This is why I've never actually bought anything; I don't have the cash).

Anyway, I'm really sorry to hear about this bad adventure for your friends. I hope it gets worked out and they get a refund. Please let us know. You are .a good friend.

This was not a traditional home purchase. It was a purchase from America's Auction Network - which sells a heckuva lot of land and homes. You're basically making a cash sale.

@Tabbycat If your friends have trouble getting their money back, and after reading complaints I bet they do, tell them to immediately contact the consumer fraud division of the Florida Attorney General's Office. I'm sure they're already familiar with the company.

I'm curious as to why this couple would put down money prior to the inspection. This isn't typically how you go about buying a house. You get approved for your loan but you don't put money down or turn money over until it's been inspected. No way would I do this.

As a side note, yes most ifomercials are for crazy goods but not all.

Hi all, sorry I can't get here as often as I'd like to. I really do appreciate each your comments. It is helpful to get different opinions and questions. And with that, this whole mess saddens me more and more as time goes by.

I have the same questions as you all do. I don't understand, to save me, the reasoning behind this purchase. My BF said she would let me know when there was any news.

@Kachina624 .... a special "Thank You" for your insight. I think you are right in your post #15..... he got caught up in the frenzy.

I will certainly tell my BF to contact the fraud division of the FL. AG Office if they have trouble recovering their money. Unfortunately, I hope and pray I'm wrong, but I expect that to happen.
