This is a really fantastic interview with her son - he is an impressive man and clearly loved and respected his mother.

Wow that is so young to die now. I wish we knew more about this condition ...ruptured colon. So sad. She died too young even though they tried to save her.

Having had many colon problems and diverticulitis, I live in fear of this happening.

Her son said she'd had several major health issues in the last few years; I imagine they all worked together and weakened her, unfortunately. I knew she'd had heart surgery a while back.

I had an episode of diverticulitis in February - absolutely miserable. It was located in my upper colon - the pain was on the right side - so I diagnosised myself as a sick appendix. I was thinking the trip to the ER was going to be in and out (the appendix that is). I was hospitalized for 3 days. I still have a little pain and mild issues. Miserable - my sympathies go out to you Toria08.

Just had a bout of diverticulitis and was in the hospital a total of 11 days on 3 IV antibiotics. Was diagnosed with a "micro perforation" and will need surgery as soon as possible.

Patty's death announcement REALLY made my day!

Patty's face looks so much like a little girl I grew up with, a neighbor.

Looking back, I can see where my neighbor was troubled as a child. She's 60ish now and resides in a house for mentally ill people who are able to function with supervision.

That darling face of Patty Duke above just makes me want to cry for them both.

I always knew Sean was her son but did not know until reading yesterday that John adopted him and Patty came out in her biography saying she believed he was really Desi Arnaz Jr.'s son. Nor did I know she had a short affair with him to begin with.

Patty was such a wonderful actress.

John Astin lives here in Baltimore, he teaches theater classes at Johns Hopkins Univ. He is 86, quite an age difference between he and Patty.

That was a wonderful interview. So close to her passing, and such honest and loving views and comments. Unlike any other thing I've seen from the family of someone who has just passed. He is one remarkable person, like his mother.

Per the Huffington Post and other net news Patty Duke died of "sepsis from a ruptured intestine". Sepsis is something to learn about. It is a reaction to an infection and it attacks your vital organs. [ check "Sepsis Alliance" a sepsis awareness movement] It can happen anytime even while in a hospital. We lost my mother from it. She had been in and out of the hospital several times without a diagnosis. We were told my sister was not feeding her properly thus causing her bowl problems. My sister was/is trained in the dietary field. The last time Mom was discharged from the hospital she was weak and had to go to rehab. The first thing the rehab doctor did was read her record and ask to do his own exam. Within several minutes of the exam Mom was isolated. We were told what was found and that she had it for some time. By this time the treatment could not help her. The sepsis had attached her kidneys and she was gone in about 2 months. Please educate yourself on this. It can be treated if found quickly. Most people do recover. I do not mean to alarm anyone but this is just another case where what we do not know can hurt us. We all need to ask questions whenever there is doubt. Even trained medical people do not know everything.
