I just received a call from Marriott

from a local phone number, so I answered. There are no Marriotts in my city. It was a pre-recorded message that said my phone number had been selected for a free night's stay, just press 1. I have never stayed at a Marriott. I hung up. But I did think about staying on the line and telling them that I wouldn't feel safe staying there.

Marriott Hotels are great properties and a great place to stay. DH is a "lifetime" rewards member and have never had a problem during our stays.

Smart move Maggie. I was just about to call and ask to be placed in the room next to yours. I wouldn't bring a camera but I think I could get us into all kinds of trouble!

Anything could happen anywhere, IMO.

We only stay at Marriotts.

I thought the hotel that Erin Andrews stayed at was a franchise and not a corporate hotel.

I absolutely love Marriott Residence Inns. It's like having your own little aparment.

They are more for long-term stays, but people do just nightly stays also. They are great. and the kitchen is fully equipped. I stayed once in one for over two weeks and it was totally like having my own apartment. Love them. We also got continental breakfast (very good) and two or three nights a week they had "socials" so the guests could meet each other. They served us dinner - on the house. I esp. liked Bar B Q night in the courtyard. So fun! I was even able to bring a guest to the meet and greet dinners. Love the Residence Inn! During the time I was there it was my birthday and the management put a huge fruit tray in my 'fridge when I was out one day (it lasted me for an entire week) and gave me a bunch of chocolates too with a birthday card signed by the staff. So nice! And I felt totally safe.

Oh, I agree that Marriotts are probably great places to stay. I just found the timing very, very interesting. Even though the entity Marriots wasn't involved in the lawsuit, there is bleed through, and I took it as a preemptive marketing call.

dh is a rewards member at marriott and he gets all sorts of advantages from them. i love their hotels. impeccable.

Marriott is also involved in time sharing. Perhaps this could have been related to timeshare sales. We are always getting calls from Wyndam Hotels for that reason.

Oh geez is common sense around any more? The chance of someone wanting to video you nude is rare.

Hanging up was a smart move. This call was was not from Marriott. If you would have pressed #1, the caller would have locked in your phone number. Then he could have made long distance calls with your number. Also, your number could be used to spam other people. This is how these criminals operate and never get caught.

Some of these robo callers will transfer you to a live person who will try to get your credit card info in order to make your reservation and keep your free night on hold. Marriott has issued a warning to not respond to these spamming phone calls.

CARMIE: Exactly my thoughts. Funny that very few think of this. I'd just directly call the official Marriott phone number and find special offers there.

wow-I didn't know that. I'm glad you mentioned that about pressing in the number and how that works.

I got a call today that I put in a complaint about but it said press 2 if u want your number removed from calling list, so I did. I hope that wasn't a mistake. Usually I don't answer but it was a local number with a recorded message.

There are so many calls lately. I now no longer answer unless they show up as a known contact. Everyone else goes to voicemail and if they do not leave a message I block them without exception. Sometimes I wonder if I am missing out, but it is getting irritating.

Around these parts, some Marriotts used to be owned by other corporations, but that doesn't really mean much, does it? I stayed in a London Marriott for 10 nights. It was one of the best. I would stay there again. Anybody interested in splitting the cost? There are some great shows in the West End that I hear should NOT be missed....

Marriott is a wonderful brand and a free night would be a very tempting offer if it were legitimate, but unfortunately the robo-call you received is a scam used by fraudsters with the sole purpsoe to get your credit card information. If you type Marriott free night scam into your search engine, you will see it is a widespread scam that has been going on for several years.

I worked for the #1 hotel brand for years. If you don't use an online "booking service", you will get your best "deal" by calling the 800# reservation line. You will be amazed at the number of discounts they offer........AAA, AARP........specials for service men & women, and most hotels brands have their own "club" with "rewards" for frequent stays, etc.

It is a mistake to think that if you arrive late, you will get a "cheap" room......rates are set by corporate, and depend on season, occupancy, etc.
