Thanks, @lolakimono for making me aware of this thread. Some of you know that my dad was hospitialized in January and subsequently passed away. I moved in with my mom at the time and haven't been able to leave. Caring for her is time consuming on top of working and other obligations, so I haven't had a great deal of time for the forum. I try to peek in every now and then, but I've been hesitant to start any new threads.

At the recommendation of my forum friends, I took Mom to her GP for evaluation. The GP agreed that something was amiss and referred us to a neurologist, who did further eval, then sent her for a CT scan. Next week we go back to him for an EEG (I think that's it). Once he knows what we're dealing with, he'll know how to proceed. He said he can refer us to a social worker at that point so that we can see what services are available to her.

Probably the thing that has me most on edge is that I havent' had time for baking, which has long been my de-stressor. I'm hoping that we'll have some answers soon and I'll be back in my own house by summer, but it's not looking likely at this point.

Anyway, thank you @Poodlepet2 and @Mothertrucker for asking about me. I'll try to be more present on the boards. I so love chatting with all of you.

@house_cat, glad to hear from you, but sorry you're still dealing with your Mom's situation, hopefully it'll be resolved in a good way soon. Been thru a similiar time myself, I can only say it's not easy so please also take care of yourself. My thoughts & prayers are with you.

You've been missed, hope you can manage to pop in whenever.

Housecat, my friend, my deepest sympathies.......what a heavy load you are under......I am deeply sorry for your loss, and I know it is frightening with what is going on with your mother-and as I recall, your Dad was her primary care-giver......May Adonai bless you and keep you my dear friend.....and I am just going to say it-but you post so many great, thoughtful, engaging questions, and. I love you for it. We miss you, and we are here for you-and I give you, my dear friend, a virtual cup of your favorite tea, accompanied by a delicious warm buttered scone(bathed in Devonshire cream).....

Quick update: Shortly after I posted this morning, Mom fell and broke her hip. I spent the last 12 hours at the hospital. The orthapedist will read the xrays and CT scan tomorrow and make a determination of what happens next. I'll update when possible.

Update:

She fell on Sunday morning. They took xrays, CT scans and lots of other tests before I left on Sunday night. At that time they told us we'd meet with the orthopedist on Monday to see what course of action was necessary.

Low and behold, we got a phone call at 12:30 am Monday telling us to be at the hospital at 6 am Monday for surgery.

She had surgery yesterday and it went well. It wasn't the hip bone it'self that broke - it was kind of complicated for my small mind to understand, but the gist of it was that the bone that joins the hip was fractured and they had to reinforce it with screws. She was out of surgery by 11 am yesterday, but that's when the "fun" began. She is extrememly disoriented and had several periods of agitation, which included yelling, crying, trying to disrobe and pull out her IV and monitors. I was thinking I'd have to move into the hospital to keep an eye on her, but they set up a private CNA "sitter" to spend the night in her room. Mom's roommate has Alzheimer's, so they must have decided it was better to provide extra care for the two ladies than deal with the consequences.

In any case, she is getting good care. The way I understand it is that she will remain at the hospital until she can put 25% of her body weight onto the leg and when the pain is manageable. At that point she'll be transferred to a local convalescent home for rehab. I'm not sure how strong she is or how far we'll get in this process, but that's where we are right now.

I was awake well past midnight last night, cleaning out her fridge so that I can close up this apartment and move back to my house for the duration. This morning I was up at 5 am so that I can make sure the beds have clean sheets in anticipation for my brother's visit in April. In additon, I didn't realize how much of my own stuff I had moved here gradually, and most of that has to be transported back to my house. It's important that I deal with it today, as I have to be back at work tomorrow.

So, there ya go... at least it's never boring around here.

Dear Housecat: I am so sorry to hear about all of the trying times with your mom. Somehow I missed your father's passing. Please accept my sincere condolences. My heart goes out to you and your family as you deal with these events. I have been there with my dad a few years ago and know the stress and strain it takes on a daily basis. You truly are a very caring and loving daughter. We should make you the saint of the year. Please take care of yourself while your mom has help in the hospital.

Aside from some of the cognitive issues already underway, when they dope (and I don't mean medicate, I mean dope) an older person such as your mother post surgery (to address pain) it can cause some personality changes. I am glad that she survived the surgery and is under the appropriate care for her current condition.

I fired up another flameless candle Karen - this one will go for your Ma until you tell me you no longer need it.

This is sad news indeed. You are a loving caring daughter.

I hope your mom recovers fully and in a timely way. I also am glad that the two ladies in the room have a medical person in the room because you need a break somehow.
