Private Investigator

Just out of curiosity...has anyone here either hired a private investigator or known someone who has? I am very curious as to what your experience has been and whether you thought it was worth it.

Years and years ago, my Mom hired one.

It totally paid off as far as her settlement went, she was happy!

My husband hired one to watch for thefts....it was worth it in his mind.This guy was an interesting character.He had built a revolving license plate so he could switch up to different provinces and one time he forgot to switch back and he was stopped by police for driving with an expired plate.He realized his mistake as officer was headed to his vehicle so he pressed a button to put the correct plate in place.The officer was totally baffled.This was about thirty years ago before all the technology.

I dated one once for almost a year. He was a former Secret Service agent when Ford was President. His stories were fascinating and he took me on a couple of "jobs." I stopped seeing him when I found out he was married with children. He fooled me for almost a year . . . that's how good he was. We did not part amicably, to say the least.

Yes, I hired one once. Great investment. My husband had moved to our new city ahead of me to start his job, and unfortunately I had to hire a PI to check up on him (for various reasons I will not reveal here). The PI reported regularly, was very communicative, kept great records. My husband came home for a holiday and ended up getting snowed in, so I had to talk to the PI from the closet at times AND keep him updated as to when my husband was going to return to the new city so the PI could resume surveillance.

It was all worth it when I told my husband that I was going to attach the PI report to the public divorce record unless he agreed to my terms. Knowing he wasn't in a position to get fussy, the divorce went through uncontested.

Used to work with one who worked in the same law office I did. Interesting chap.

There was a show on tv last year about a real private eye, very interesting missions. One woman thought her husband was cheating on her with a young blonde. It turned out to be his daughter that he had never told his current wife about. Another guy hired him because he thought his gf was pulling something on him. The gf turned out to be a guy in transition.

If someone has an inkling to hire a PI, yes, they probably already know. But not always. It can be money very well spent. It can buy peace of mind if the only thing you are getting in a relationship is lies.

I know what you're saying, in a relationship if you have those doubts it's probably a waste, unless incontrovertible evidence is to your advantage for $ or custody.

But, it's not always about an actual relationship. Sometimes someone is doing something to you, but you don't who. You can't put a stop to it unless you know who it is.

It seems you are speaking of divorce situations, but that is not what I'm speaking of. There are many other reasons one might need PI services.

Sometimes you know the answer but legally you may need to have "proof" if you are to go that route. The judge won't take just your firm belief that something is as you say. So, you gotta have serveillence records to plead you case...

My daughter hired one a few years ago. Her ex husband kept quitting jobs and moving around and would not pay child support. When she found out where he was working she garnished his check. The PI found him every time he moved.

My son is in a messy custody dispute and his former girlfriend accused him of child abuse (battering, bruising). It wasn't so as soon and kids lived with us every other two weeks he had them. It went to trial, lawyer suggested we hire a PI for one day ($1500). Best money we ever spent (his research proved her a total liar with a live-in felon thug b.f.). We won!
