Both my parents sent in their DNA to ancestry and they show as my parents. I think there is confusion due to the type of testing. For males, they can have the Y based testing which will show their haplogroup as passed down father to son. Women don't have Y chromosomes (naturally) and so there is a mitichondrial test that shows the dna passed from mother to daughter and the haplogroup. Men can also order the mitochondrial test.

Ancestry just does the autosonomal test. The reason that the Native American does not show up in Ancestry is because many of the north American tribes will not provide DNA for comparison citing privacy issues.

I used gedmatch, which is free, to map my ancestry tests and the NA showed up. They use different algorithms than ancestry does. These results are all determined by statistical probability algorithms.

I guess because I'm old and my daughter who knows all about internet security, etc, keeps telling me, I would never let my DNA be 'done'.

I would worry how it could possibly be used. My mind starts working and it goes into overload.

I did one time have my late husband's name researched (even though I knew a lot about it). I wanted his 'coat of arms'.

It is beautiful (I gave it to my grandson who's named after him) when my husband died.

Other than that, I'm not doing my DNA like that.

I used ancestry.com, because there were a few gaps in our family history that I hoped could get the blanks filled in. It did not tell us anything we didn't already know.

My son used 23 and me, which has since taken their customer's personal info and sold it to another company.

Buyer beware.

I had mine done through ancestry dot com. I would stick to ancestry or Nat Geo. 23 and me was stopped from advertising/soliciting customers several years ago for false advertising and got in trouble with the govt. They have just started in again, with a different pitch to skirt the govt issues and more careful what they promise. Their ads have targeted wanting to know about potential diseases, while ancestry and nat geo are about your ancestors/ethnicity etc.

I would steer clear of any service that mentions anything medical - those would be the ones most likely to do something untoward with the results.

You can get "deals" from time to time. I paid $99 for the ancestry testing. Nat Geo charges more. My results matched 98% with what I already knew about my ancestry, so I'm pretty sure they are accurate.

Well, maybe it's an oops, but I just got mine back from 23&Me yesterday. Nothing I can do about it now, but I'm not going to lose sleep over it. My sister and brother and I had a question about some hidden family stories in our ancestry, and this pretty much answered it, as well as gave me some confidence about what I don't have to worry about.

I thought it interesting that it indicated I should have fast-twitch muscles, when I actually have slow-twitch for endurance.

Yep, I am paranoid. Would love not to have to worry, but because of my age on a daily basis I get calls about falling down and cannot get up, hip replacement, hearing loss... and it goes on and on. Senior privileges I guess. And my insurance company calls and sends letters to remind me about testing for illnesses that I don't even have.

I even got a call from a doctors office in NYC (I live in MD) just before HIPAA came into effect... I had taken a free scan in my doctors office for bone loss.... The office in NY wanted me to be part of a test. I asked how they got my name and they said in the phone book. At which point I blew.... berated the gal on the other end, called my doctor and complained... He sold out. Information is for sale.. wish it were not true. Sad.

I'm on Medicare. It isn't likely that at my age I'm going to develop or pop out with some genetic disorder that's a huge shock, or mean I can't get health insurance or life insurance. Whatever *else* someone might want to do with my DNA other than ancestry isn't going to affect me negatively so I really don't care about the medical aspect. But if I was in my 40s and had kids and grandkids, and bought health insurance and life insurance, I might.

However - just like any medical testing, your data is attached to a number, not a name. You are identified only by that number, as far as research. You may be described as a Caucasian female X years old, but that's about it.

Any company that leaked a person's contact information and identity would be in a huuuge heap o' trouble. What they do with statistical data that doesn't have my name attached might just help someone, some day.

My husband had his DNA profile done by ancestry.com last year. He really enjoys working on his geneaology as a hobby. He gave me the test from ancestry.com as a Christmas gift--think it was on sale for $78 or so including shipping both ways. I am awaiting the results and he, our daughter and I are excited to learn more about my roots! No anxiety here---just interest!

KK
