FIRST UTERUS TRANSPLANT? SERIOUSLY?

I think it's great that modern medicine continues to advance, but, IMO, this goes way too far .....

I saw on GMA this morning that the Cleveland Clinic has done the first uterus transplant on a 26 year old Texas woman. Consultation with 70 specialists preceded the surgery.

I can only imagine what this surgery cost! What a ridiculous waste of money!

Haven't they heard of ADOPTION ??

What are your thoughts on this?

I thought the same thing about adoption, but many people want to have their own biological child. This surgery will not be as expensive in the future, as more and more women choose to have it. The lady will only live with the donor uterus for a short while. She will be having it removed after she has children to avoid the continuation of anti rejection drugs.

Here's an article from the NYTimes with a lot more details. She was born without a uterus and she and her husband have already adopted three little boys. The uterus will be removed after she has two babies from IVF, if possible.

This young woman adopted 3 boys, so she is raising children. The odd part to me is that if she becomes pregnant thru IVF and has a child in the future, the transplanted uterus will be removed after it serves it's purpose!

Seriously? I hope the surgery is successful and that uterus will function as the young woman and her doctors hope it will.

As for the cost, I also would assume that for the first of its kind, the operation had huge risks and hugh costs, but the costs for the first of almost anything experimental are far greater than the cost for succeeding trials and successes and even the inevitable failures.

I have no moral objection to this surgery, and I do know several couples from long ago who chose invitro instead of adoption. The costs were huge, the risks were great, but there's still a demand for it and for other procedures so that couples can have a biological child. If medicine can learn to transplant a functioning uterus, that adds another choice to the menu. I'm not judging.

Some say male pregnancy is only five years away due to uterus transplants.

I think the impact on society will be something all of us will be discussing.

I think it's a very personal decision. I would adopt vs. get a uterus implanted, but I never had kids so procreation wasn't as important to me. For some women the pregnancy experience is very imortant. That's all I can think of.

She doesn't need the uterus for biology. The uterus would be for pregnancy only. Eggs come from your ovaries which I assume she has if she and her husband are doing IVF.

I'm sure this is and will continue to be a huge medical learning experience for the doctors that can possibly be used to advance (I guess in some views) more useful or practicial applications.

I wish her and her family a safe and healthy pregnancy if it works.

Wow OP that is harsh. Today is the International Day of Women. I think it amazing that science is moving forward on young womens health. Not just helping with erectile dysfunction etc.

My thoughts are that I wish her well. Having a child and being pregnant is paramount to some women and if this makes it possible, then it is a tribute to modern medicine and progress.

Although this is the first in the US, like with most groundbreaking medical procedures, it has been done other countries, Sweden, in this case..

I remember how incredible the first heart transplant surgery was in 1967.. We were glued to the evening news learning about how Dr Christiaan Barnard had performed the first human heart transplant in Capetown, South Africa...previously, it had only been done on dogs...

We live in world where the seemingly impossible can become possible....

I hope her dreams are realized.

My personal belief is that I can never understand the lengths some people go through sometimes. But it is not my body so I have no say in what they do with theirs. I just know that I feel that if I were meant to have a child, it would happen and I wouldn't go through any extent to force it to happen. If I really wanted another child, I would adopt. I've never been a woman who feels that I must have a child from my own loins. I could easily love a child that I adopt as much as one from my own body.

I just picture myself, born without a uterus at age 26.

I see it as miracle for this woman. I hope she is able to deliver a healthy baby in the near future.

It's not that simple to adopt in the USA, especially newborns. If you have struggles with conceiving you can't relate to this. I walked the walk, and I am grateful for my only (that I conceived) and what modern science provides.
