Oh, my, how horrible! I always heard that the latex or rubber balloons could be dangerous, but didn't realize the mylar ones are, too! It never would have occured to me. Sometimes I wonder how us old-timers ever got through our own childhoods, because there are a lot more safety laws in place, now-a-days.

What are they saying? I don't understand what had happened. The balloon deflated and landed on her face and smothered her as she was sleeping?

Very strange. Condolences to the little girl's family. At any rate, I'm not a fan of mylar balloons due to the global helium shortage.

She apparently was trying to inhale the helium gas from the balloon and was exfixiated. So sad.

That may have been what she was doing - inhaling helium to make her voice sound funny. I hadn't thought of that.

So very, very sad but, at the same time how very strange?..... may she rest in peace ... I would think at 8 years old she should have been able to take the balloon off of her face before it caused her death?

I got the impression she ripped the balloon open and stuck the whole thing over her head. It said the father cut it off.

It's tragic but it's also very strange. I read the explanation of how they think it happened but I can't picture. I guess I could see it if she inhaled the balloon accidentaly which is what happened to a child when my girls were small. That was a freak accident too. The child was blowing up a balloon and inhaled rather than exhaled and the balloon slipped down right over his trachea and he suffocated. But that was a small party balloon. After than, parents were told to only have mylar balloons in the house and at parties.

Bizarre does not begin to describe this sad situation. If she cut a mylar balloon and crawed inside....how the heck could an 8 year old suffocate? It was a huge balloon and mylar doesn't cling like latex. Unless she inhaled a massive amount of the helium and lost consiousness immediate. Okay....that could be what happened.
