nOW THE q IS ASKING for CVV numbers. I don't mind this, other places ask when you charge, but the excuse given was, IT'S FOR YOUR PROTECTION. OK, THEN ARE YOU GOING TO ASK FOR IT EACH TIME?

CS explained that, say someone knows your phone number and or address, they can charge on your card because we just ask for phone #. So I asked are you going to ask each time in ordering auto, by CS, or online. No she said. So I said, the only way for protection is to ask each time or it will be the same as now, they know your phone number and address. I did not like the explaintion for the 3 diget number.

Now, I am not against giving them the number after 25 years of buyine and lots of EP, but the explaination was bogus. They need to ask each time which is a hassle, but if they want to protect us, now out 3 diget number is entered.

I have decided to pay up my ep like I do every statement and stop buying. That's me unless someone can come up with why they are doing this. Remember, not opposed, just the stupid explaination.

To me the explanation would be totally irrelevant. They need it to prove it's your card you are using and most importantly, that the card is in your physical possession. The most common type of card hacking is online, where your card is being used to charge things and it's still in your wallet and you don't even know. If you have the CVV to give them, they know the card is in your possession and it's much less likely the charge is fraudulent. I don't care what reason a newly trained rep comes up with, I *know* the reason why; nothing else matters to me.

Read my post, I may not have made it clear. Bottom line, for protection and the card is in my hand, not someone else, then ask me each time, not list it once.

AGAIN, I AM NOT AGAINST, BUT THE EXPLAINTION WAS LIKE I WAS STUPID. IT DIDN,T MAKE SENSE, THAT IS THE GRIPE

So very glad I responded to this thread - NOT.

I just ordered Chinese food with a CC. I put in the CVV. I was given the option to have them save my info; I said No. So, since I said no, if I were to order another time I would need to give them all of the info, including the CVV, again. If I had elected to say Yes, they most likely would not have asked me for the CVV when I ordered again.

Whatever they said to you DOESN'T MATTER to anyone but you. You're making a mountain out of a molehill. You only wanted to rant, you don't want information and logic.

Carry on.

Some places online I shop at I have to enter it for each purchase. That's the way it should be always at all stores. It protects you. It could be anyone using your card to shop online. If they don't have that CVV # they cannot buy from places that ask for it. Each time my card was used I still had my cards. The purchases made online were done with my# but they did not have my card. All the places online where purchases were made are out that money because they did not ask for that #. This is what Discover Card Fraud Dept told me when someone used my card. I asked them why didn't they go after the criminals since they knew who was using my card? He said Discover was not out any money but all the places charges were made were out the money. He told me it costs too much for the business to go after them for these small amounts. The crooks are going to keep doing it since they know they can get away with it.

You can give your credit card # & that CVV # to a not so honest person that may keep the info & plan to use it when they no longer work where they collected the info.

Work in a customer service job and it really helps to protect your card. If the CVV doens't match the card number is rejected. Scammers often don't have the CVV and will just use the number and it may go through if that company doesn't require a CVV. Also so many numbers are almost exactly the same with maybe one number is all the difference. It has happened in our office before where we have accidently charged another persons card because of the numbers being almost exactly the same. So we know require the CVV so cards aren't mixed up. The CVV protects your card from accidentally being charged if its similar to another person card number.

CS really won't know the reason for a change in policy - they are too low in the pecking order to be able to defend a new requirement. I see it more that they are repeating what they were told, or how they interpreted the instruction, and not all will be as skilled at explaining, unless they are reading from a script.
