Help! Anyone have an EEG?

Two weeks ago I went into my local banks and used the ATM. All of a sudden the screen became confusing to me and I didn't get my cash. As I walked toward the teller I apparently collapsed. I came to in the anbulance but was confused as to where I was, the year and what happened. My b/p was very low 80/68. and my blood sugar was in the 40's I was told I had suffered convultions. My MRI came back negative praise God, and now I have to have the eeg and I'm very afraid. The only thing I can think of what may have caused the seizure was a medicine I was taking for IBS Noratriptylene and I didn't like the way it made me feel so I stopped it after 10 days.

Anyone familiar with this?

Yes, they will put sensors on your head and record your brain activity. It doesn't hurt or anything. It doesn't take very long either. They are many reasons for seizures and some are never known.

I hope you find the cause, don't stress ...that makes it worse

Yes, I've had several and it's painless and doesn't take much time to do.

I know it's hard to do, but I agree with @nunya about lessening the stress. Please try to relax the best you can. If you have methods that work for you, whether it's meditation, deep breathing, positive affirmations, scripture readings, prayer, exercise, or anything else, please try to use those. I send prayers and positive thoughts out to you.

Blood sugar that low probably made you pass out. I hope you told your doctor you were stopping your IBS medicine. The EEG is being done to rule out any neurological cause.

Do you carry a glucometer with you? Have you ever had a drop like that before?

Yes, had another one in January. Just a hint, don't fix up your hair too much because they use something to make the lead stay in place. It isn't the best fashion statement when you walk out! Kidding aside you just sit there and do nothing.

That must have been so scary.

I just read the side effects of nortriptyline,

and everything you had-from blurred vision, confusion, fainting, seizures, is listed under side effects for this medication. I hope you find out and if it was from that, that you don't have to have it happen again

An EEG is nothing - easy peasy. Of much more concern is WHy was your blood sugar 40.Has your doctor addressed that?

OH my goodness I am so sorry. After my head injury before I could drive they made sure I was not having any trouble so I had a EEG. They don't hurt at all.........it does not take long..........I pray nothing is wrong but be sure and tell them all your meds and take that bottle in and tell them you did not have any issues until you got on that med and see if that med can cause seizures. Please keep us posted.

They will glue about 20 square sensors to your scalp which will measure your brain waves. It does not hurt. Usually takes about 20 minutes. You may be asked to open and close your eyes, or read, etc. The worst part is taking the glue out of your hair. Lol! Hope you feel better.

@hsawaknow, I worked for a neurologist when I was in high school. My main job was to transcribe his dictation of EEG results. Part of the training involved observing EEG procedures. Like others said, you should not worry about having it done. ONLY MY OPINION, your fainting incident MAY have resulted from the drug you were taking and/or abruptly discontinuing it on your own. Be sure that you tell your doctors about that in particular. Maybe it is a factor, maybe it isn't. It could have been a one-time thing. Try not to worry. Keep us updated.

I have never had an EEG but I am aware of what they are generally done for certain patients. I have had electrodes attached to my head for my 6 sleep studies.

Glad there were people around to get help for you when this happened. Did know a fellow that worked at 1 of the ice rinks that had epilepsy and saw him go into a seizure one night at the rink. He told me he has had several EEG tests done over the years.

While a BP of 80/68 might seem very low to some, my normal BP runs 90/60 most of the time. Now when my wife quit breathing at home after 1 of her abdominal surgeries, her BP was 70/40 when I called 911.

I hope everything turns out well for you and you don't have any more of these frightening experiences.

I'm so sorry you experienced that!! How scary.

Agree with everybody else...probably the easiest, least stressful test I've had, and I've had a lot. As I recall, no hair products can be used that day, either, and your hair will be a mess...don't plan on stopping off somewhere on your way home. :-)

That's so frightening, glad you are okay. I worry about all of the new drugs on the market, I always ask my doctor for medicines that have been on the market for years - something that's tried and true. Good luck and keep us informed.

If you've already had an MRI, an EEG should be a breeze for you. MRIs are loud and enclosed and an EEG isn't either of those.

I hope they find a solution for you. Not knowing what's wrong is very scary.

Thank you all for your information and experience. My appointment is on March 25th at 7:45am the doctors want me to wake up at 3am in case they want to do a sleep study?

As for the low blood sugar they couldnt explain it, Im not diabetic but I didnt eat very much that day.
