Has anyone attended the Mensa Annual Gathering in recent years? This year's AG is in San Diego and sounds really tempting with interesting programs.

Is it worth attending and why or why not?

Is "Mensa" the organization that requires a minimum IQ for membership? I guess the fact that I even have to ask that question minimizes my chances of attending the convention.

Last night on the Amazing Race, one of the participants mentioned he was a member of Mensa. He and his brother do not have the common sense God gave geese.

If it sounds tempting and interesting, then why ask? Some may find it worth attending and others may not. So, who would you listen to?

The fact that he had to mention that he was a Mensa member, shows his lack of common sense. Besides that, they are the most boring people you'll ever meet....

The simplest answer to that question is a lot of things sound interesting in promotional literature but fail to meet the expectations raised.

Someone that has attended a recent AG would be in a position to critique it on a personal level and based on the information provided I would be better able to determine if the material is hype or something appealing.

Met a gal not long ago who was 'a member'. She was arrogant and rude. Looked down on everyone. Didn't take to her and that whole nonsense. Should life give those members an obstacle like an accident or illness where their wits won't help them, they are really no better than the average ordinary cow poke. Most I've met have been the same way - snobs. They are all members of the Mutual Admiration Society - very sad.

I can't answer @Marp's question, but it brought up an old memory.

Many years ago when I was having a horrible semester my 1st year in grad school, I took the free Mensa screening test out of anxiety. ("Am I bright enough to be in grad school?")

I passed- -but took longer than the allowed time-limits for the math questions. This was their "screening test" they sent to your home; way before people had computers at home. Passing (by cheating on time) only entitled me to take the proctored exam.

I never thought of actually taking that test or joining and hanging out with Mensa folks. That would have cost money and I had none at the time.

Isaac Asimov I think was one of the original Mensa people, and Theodore Sturgeon's brother. There are science fiction roots in Mensa.

I've worked with doctors who were geniuses - at first they seem like snobs but once you get to know them and they open up to you they are usually very lonely people who devote themselves to their work. If they are married they are usually rather disconnected from their spouse/family. You must work with them for years and years before they start to open up and be familiar and friendly.

So from what I've read here the intellectually gifted, Mensa member-type individuals are arrogant, rude, and boring snobs? I hate to break the news, but after reading some of these posts, they sure don't have the market cornered.

I've posted here for quite a while and what was insinuated about Marp was not only wrong, but downright mean and nasty. She is owed an apology, but trust me, I won't hold my breath.

It really hurts me and makes me sad to see these kinds of mean-spirited comments.

Where would we be in the world without these really smart and gifted individuals?

I think of people like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs and the amazing technology that they created, for example.

Look what we can all do/use now, thanks to them.

How odd--I was just thinking of the AG I went to years ago, suddenly, on Friday. Hadn't thought about it in years and then you post this.

The AG can be fun--you meet people and at least at the one I went to, you can play games, if that's your thing. A large group such as San Diego probably would get some interesting sessions and speakers. The one I went to was in Boston. I wouldn't say it was the most interesting meeting I've ever attended but it was fun. We actually had more fun in our RG's every summer.

Look at the program and see if anything appeals. They are good places to meet people. I met my husband at a weekly Mensa games night. It would have been our 20th anniversary Leap Day, but he's passed on. Lots of people in our group got married--and are still married. Nice.

I have now cruised through this thread twice. There was nothing whatever in the OP to warrant these responses. I see a lot of jealousy and inferiority complexes, and the "old history carryover/payback" thing going on.

It all says a whopping lot about those who spew it, none of it complimentary.

But I'm sure they'll carry on to spew another day, another topic, another victim.

And boring? Mmm. I had a good time meeting some well-known writers and I married my delightful husband. Not boring. He was a stage comedian (and a barista!) at the time.

Some people WERE boring, and some were the World's Most Intelligent UnderAchievers (I think there was a special interest group for that.) As in ANY group, there are people you like, and people you don't. One can't generalize.
