To Kill a Mockingbird is my favorite book. I read it so many times and found so many new messages and lessons in it.

That book should be required reading in all high schools.

I admired her because she never sought out publicity. She was a great writer and shared her work.

I didn't read the latest book because I want to think of Atticus Finch as a hero. He was such a dynamic character, why ruin his legacy.

Atticus Finch is my favorite character in fiction. I, too, choose not to read Go Set a Watchman.

So very sad, her last few years greatly disabled, and very questionable that those with health and financial control over her had her best interests at heart. At least she is at peace now.

Oh thank you @LTT1 for the little movie clip! The movie was great too. I was about 7 or 8 when I saw it, afterwards I announced to my Mom that I would be marrying Gregory Peck! That began a lifelong love of the book and him!

Sorry to read this.

Was thinking of her just yesterday. I saw a copy of Mockingbird and thought, "I read it when I was in school. What's the big deal?"

She was a giant. She was responsible for changing the hearts and minds of a lot of people of her generation and the countless children who read her book in elementary school and those who only saw the movie.

I think TKAM is probably the best American novel ever written.

Did kids really read her book in elementary school? I thought high school was generally the place - or middle school if the kids are mature enough.

I know I read it in elementary school! Saw the movie too then. But, back then things were so different! In retrospect we probably did alot of things that they would never get away with today! We even had "Christmas" vacation, celebrated Valentine's Day and hung out the wide open windows from the 3rd floor at school without any form of safety concern much less a helmet!
