@GingerPeach Thank you for sharing the article! For those of us who grew up with Barbies (and I think there are quite a few!) I'm sure this will be a very interesting topic. My parents gave me the "first" Barbie doll. I have no idea if her body image affected the way I look at myself, today. Good or bad, I enjoyed reading the article, looking at all the pictures (especially the slide show of Barbie through the years) and (LOL) checking out Barbie's changing fashion. I think the new body types are a good thing... long overdue!

This has been on every news channel all morning as if it is top news. Can not believe anyone would really care. There is more important things to discuss than Barbie dolls. It is simular to the discussion about the color of the dress that made the news a few months back...... The news must be hard up if this is what they deem important news.

they were losing marketshare big time. it does look like a blast to work on the Barbie project! i had the bubble-haired brunette Barbie and later got a Francie, my sister got a Skipper. . we didnt look to them to be examples of real teens and kids . they lived in our imaginary play! the dresser's door section was their apartment. the wood floor and threshold separated by the living room wall to wall was their beach. and oooh when it snowed...they skiied on popsicle sticks tied with twist ties! the wig head Barbie with the longer red wig became the hippie boyfriend. i wonder if there is a corresponding "new" Ken doll

I was going to say something, but I'm not going to. There's 3-4 off the top of my head they can add, but that'll come in time, I'm sure. I'm glad they've expanded the looks and types and made them Realistic!!! Bravo.

I love it and I wish they had these choices when I was a kid and when my daughters were young enough to play with them. I dont't think it's a risk at all, I think the article is sensationalizing this decision.

This is great!!!! Body image is definitely an important topic that affects girls and women. It's actually nice to see that my body type is represented; I fall within both curvy and tall.

I applaud the new Barbies, and the more realistic body types. However, as achild I had one of the first Barbies, and the clothes were beautiful, nowadays not so much. I wish they had nicer clothes to go with the new bodies.

I saw this on FB and to Mattel I say its about time!

And to myself I say why why why did i give all of my original as in "thee" original Barbie dolls and accessories (including Midge, Skipper and Ken as well as Barbie) to my 1st husbands little sister who destroyed them. I should have saved them. (I would have given them to my 3 granddaughters).

First thing I thought also. Kudos to Mattel! Loved the images in the "Time" article. I wonder if these changes will bring "playing with dolls" back into vogue. I was still playing with dolls when the first Barbie came out---I was 12. Looking at these photos, I wonder if our self image was influenced by Barbie. I don't think so---what do you think?

I really don't think body image is profoundly affected by a doll/toy. Just my opinion.

The discussion I heard this morning said they were afraid when given a choice, most young girls would more than likely select the slender Barbie as opposed to the curvy Barbie.

People have mentioned body image, but I think it's more than that. What's nice is that there's an obviously Asian Barbie and an African American Barbie, etc. Full Barbies, not Barbie's sidekick. I like it that there's also a curvy Barbie available.

And there's one for me, the not tall Barbie, lol.

Growing up, to me a doll was a doll. I had several and they were all different. Barbie was Barbie and her slim figure let me know what an adult female looks like.

I think it's too bad that many think all have to be accomodated to feel good about the way they are shaped. Children use their imaginations with their dolls and toys and I honestly don't believe it matters if Barbie stays slender like the original. This whole Barbie change is about adult females and not about girls who play with dolls.
