Others have not.

I know one place I worked, I was a manger and the only one scheduled some mornings who could open up and let people in. If I didn't show up and let them in, then get the management functions started until the next manager came in, the employees would be sitting out on the sidewalk.

I'd like to have a dollar for the number of times I went in with the intention of opening up, and when the other supervisor arrived, going home and resting my illness away. It never failed, though, most times, I'd have at least one other person call off, and our crew was so small, that I would't be able to leave or we'd be so understaffed we couldn't get the work done.

There are people who work places that have so little staff, and no one to call in, so unless they are practically on their death bed, they do show up out of a sense of obligation, not to mention they fear for their job. Not all companies are kind, and many give points for absences, with a certain number of points leading to disciplinary action or termination. So when you have already called off because of sick kids one month, car trouble another, having to take a family member to treatments, etc. then you yourself get sick, you are sometimes forced to show up and hope you can make it through the day, to save those points for when your kids or some other bigger emergency might take you away from work.

Also, there is a whole world of people out there who don't get paid if they don't show up. They have no paid sick time and any leave has to be arranged in advance. My husband has no sick leave at his job with UPS. I know, a major company like this has no paid sick time (at least not in his union). So he goes to work when he doesn't feel well, or looses a day's pay. Many people cannot afford to loose a day's pay because they are snotting around and are germy.

Is it right to expose others? Probably not, but the whole sanctimonious attitude of posters here who seem to not be able to fathom how anyone would show up to work sick just irritates me. Consider yourself lucky if you've always had the luxury of being able to call off sick when you don't feel well, and remember that everyone else might not be as lucky.

For wanting to go home early because you are sick, or for calling out sick?

This past Sunday, I woke up with my whole body aching, and just no energy.

I couldn't call out then, because there would not have been enough time to find someone to cover for me.

So I went in.

As the day went on, I felt worse.

I asked if I could go home.

I DON'T want to spread my germs around.

I was told that I could tough it out for a few more hours.

It wasn't like they couldn't get someone at that point. One co-worker came in looking like death warmed over, and had to run to the bathroom every half hour.

I wish sick people would go home!! Instead, they spread the germs, make me sick for a week or more, costs me $200.00 for meds and copay since I usually go right into bronchitis/pneumonia. Sheesh!

I had a principal who made us work sick and she got me sick 2x-I was out for a week both times w/a doctor's note. Not much they can say if there is a doctor's note.

Glad to say that principal is long gone.

There is no excuse for it and a good boss would not want others to be exposed and prolong the spread of germs to others in the workplace. Working while you are sick only makes for more absences in the long run. One suggestion….next time don’t ask if you can go home – simply state that you are too sick to stay and that you are going home. It is a fact so state the fact – no choice involved. As someone already said, it is part of your employee benefits and it is the smart thing to do for you and your co-workers.

I haven't had a manager make me feel guilty for calling in sick in over 20 years. I rarely ever do it anyway, but they've been very good about it. In the last few years, I've even had managers tell me to go home and work from home when I've had bad allergies or just didn't feel well but wasn't quite sick.

I've had some really bad managers who've made me feel bad about things that weren't my fault, took credit for my work, or refused to promote me for ridiculous reasons, but it's been a very long time since I had anyone make me feel bad about calling in sick.

In fact, there were two people that could have finished my shift for me.

Yes, there has been a bug going around the office.

Nobody can "make" you feel guilty. If you decide you are sick enough to go home or stay home, you should simply take your PTO or a sick day. You shouldn't feel anything, but simply responsible for taking care of yourself. Really.
