I have a Kenmore washer for approximately 10 years .... it has been nothing but trouble from the very beginning .... I have Sears service on the washer & dryer .... about 2 years ago they could not figure out what was wrong with it and over a course of 4 months they replaced every part in the washer!! .... the service people are not that good ... finally one of the service tech knew what he was doing & fixed it ... I have a two family house so, while my washer was out of commission I used my mothers washer.

Once I start the washer the lid locks BUT, if I press the stop button once the lid unlocks and allows me to put more clothes in the tub .... then all I have to do is press the start button & the washer resumes the cycle & washes the clothes.

A few days ago, I went to Lowes and bought the Whirlpool Cabrio, 4.3 cu ft washer. It was on sale for under $500, I bought 2 new stainless steel hoses, and paid $100 for a 5-year warranty (100% coverage by Lowes) - and paid $650. Free delivery (excellent) and free washer removal). A bargain. I used it twice - it's very quiet and I'm happy!!!!
<LI-SPOILER> </LI-SPOILER>

From my experience with Whirpool - i say - good choice. I've been happy with my 4 or 5 year old machine. The only thing I don't like is once you've activated it - the lid locks. You can't throw in a single sock that fell on the floor that you found 3 seconds later. That feature really bugs me - and you can't check the water level in the machine. Congratulations!

I agree that the lid locking mechanism is very frustrating....I guess it's a safety feature so little kids don't get trapped in the washer...I raised two children, and never did either one of them end up trapped in the washing machine...now that I'm old and might forget to add a piece of clothing to the wash, I'm screwed!! I feel like I'm being penalized for watching out for my children!! lol.....

I'm glad you're enjoying your new washer. However, they don't make appliances like they used to.

I just replaced a GE 2 year old refrigerator (had nothing but trouble with it) and decided to junk it.

My sister has a 3 year old Whirlpool refrigerator that was replaced twice.

These appliances are very expensive and are expensive to repair/replace. I should not have to buy an extended warranty.

I'm really upset about the lack of quality of appliances. Should we have to replace an appliance that can cost thousands of dollars every two years or so?

I'm sick of it.

Look under the lid and find a white piece of plastic. A magnet is inside that piece of plastic. Find where it sets down on the top of the washer and then place a magnet on that exact spot. Your washer will be fooled into thinking the lid is down."

On the instruction page, you add HE detergent; then load the clothes; u could add bleach in the dispenser; u could add fabric softener into the machine (I stopped using fabric softerener 2 yrs ago). During the fill/sensing, u can open the lid and add a garment -- then close the lid and press start. There is a button: start/pause.

Whirlpool Cabrio top loader, no agitator. During each cycle, u can hit the pause button and the lid will open. When the delivery man installed it, he said he doesn't get complaints for returns. I also like the 2 stainless steel hoses (hot/cold water) -- better than rubber. He also tied the rubber hose to one of the stainless steel hoses - so it doesn't come out of the opening in the wall. Model WTW5000DW1. You can go to Lowes.com and check it out. It's on sale.

I bought a Maytag washer - top loading with agitator - from Lowes in August and am very happy with it. It replaced a GE that was 25+ years old. I agree that the locking lid is a strange feature but it says because it spins so fast after the rinse cycle that it's a safety feature. I was very impressed with Lowes price, their free delivery and removal of old washer. Also, the delivery person was so helpful in explaining all the features telling me to call if there were any problems.

dusty: my previous washer, GE Profile, was so loud that u thought a plane was taking off and landing. I have the washer in my laundry room with a closed door - on a tile floor - and it's quiet. I also purchased a microfibre floor mat from Costco.com - to muffle some of the sound. I bought the 2'x3' navy mat for $35. Beautiful!!! My name on Costco.com is sandyrose - my review is on there.

With the Whirlpool, it took around 70 minutes to do a wash - once I pressed the start button. A little longer than the GE. I stay away from Home Depot and Best Buy as they have terrible reviews for their customer service. Home Depot was great when the original founders owned it --- it was sold and the service went downhill. Lots of complaints on-line for both companies.

That's why I went to Lowes.

It might take a few seconds, the machine has to stop agitating (or whatever it's doing w/o a center agitator!)...then the Lock will release and you can open it up. Just close and press "Start" again to get it going.

kivah, Please let me know if it has a metal or a polyurethane tub. I am in the market for a new washer and I need a metal tub. So glad it is working beautifully for you.

Thank you, geranium

@kivah wrote:

Geranium: The sides of the large tub are stainless steel --- and the base is a heavy plastic. The salesman said it needed to be plastic so it was light enough to spin. It's very sturdy. You can't beat the low price - and 5-year warranty.
