Has a Celebrity's Revelation abt his/her Personal Life Impact You?

Has a celebrity revealing something about his/her sexuality, childhood, past abuse, depression, etc impact you positively on any way? Nothing comes to my mind; reading about historical figures has affected but it isn't quite the same thing. The reason I ask this is because I feel like sometimes we live on a society that overshares and some justify it by saying that if it helps just one person, it is okay.

My life does not revolve what a celebrity says or does. I don't hang on their every word, and don't give a flip about what they do, as long as it isn't illegal.

No. but sometimes what they do/believe leaves a negative impression on me and makes me feel differently towards them. Still doesn't really impact MY life, though.

I think that Betty Ford's revelations about her struggles with alcohol and her breast cancer fight were very helpful to a lot of people, it brought things into the open.

The only way it might affect me is negatively, i.e. if someone I like is vocal (so that the general public knows about it) about supporting something or someone I greatly dislike, or if they are vocally anti- of something I feel very strongly positive about, I usually lose what interest I have in them. There are very few (count on one hand) people I admire so much that it wouldn't matter either way.

I am not interested in the Oscar boycott, but it always bothers me when people respond to something they don't like by saying there are so many other important things to be concerned about. It bothers me only because it is possible to be concerned and involved with more than one thing at a time. Just because someone feels strongly about the lack of diversity in the Oscar nominations doesn't mean they don't also care deeply about other world/US issues. The beauty of this country is that they have the right to protest and boycott the Oscars.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with you! But, for example, it was far easier for me to buy into Cher helping out Flint, Michigan with water than the stars worrying about their awards to themselves. It might be easier to accept if they weren't making millions.

Absolutely no impact on me.

A comment though - whenever a celebrity reveals years later that he or she had been sexually abused as a child, I usually think it is a publicity ploy to draw attention to someone who hasn't been "current" lately.

Why come forward now after all these years? Out of the clear blue sky? What motive other than publicity (except they always say it's to "help others who have gone through the same thing." I think not.)

Just an FYI: Jada and Will Smith formed a foundation that works to benefit inner-city community development, youth educational projects and under-privileged children and their families. They are also active in several other charitable efforts in the US and abroad.

I view celebrity entertainers as performers playing roles that may or may not have any relationship to who they are. I view sports celebrities as what they are not the person behind the celebrity. Any personal revelations would not affect me beyond feeling sympathy or compassion or admiration or perhaps disgust.

If we are talking about celebrities (a rather loosely used descriptive these days) that are in positions to influence--politicians, religious leaders and such--then personal revelations could very well have an impact. Within this scope I have been both motivated and repulsed by revelations to the point of taking what in my opinion is an appropriate action.

Impact on me? No. Impact by revealing that they may have Cancer, MS, Lupos, etc. and are doing what they do despite it and or surviving after treatments ... I think that is a good thing for some. It shows they are human and those that aren't "stars" can be inspired not to give up if they are diagnosed with the same. If it does help one person to not give up, then it's a good thing.

I liked the story I read about Cam Newton this week. He went to the hospital without fanfare, on his own, to cheer up a child who had cancer. The only reason the story got out was the family put it out there, not Cam's publicity team. It made me like the guy more, if that is even possible.

I am glad when I see past abuse made public. It lets others who have been abused know they don't have to hide and live in shame.

Hopefully, it will give them strength to tell their family what happened to them. Hopefully it will give them strength to see a therapist, or even to report the abuser to the police.

The same is true for revealing depression, it can encourage others go for help.

Why would anyone be against that?

I do agree we overshare these days, and one reason I don't care for Facebook.

But I do believe that if someone famous has a platform that they can use to help others, make others aware of the fact they aren't alone, there is help out there, or can raise great amounts of money and attention for good causes, and they are willing to share, it is a good thing.

It is definitely every person's right to decide just how much and what they wish to share, and when done in the right spirit (as in not for attention or keeping themselves in the spotlight or relevant) it can be beneficial for them, and others as well.

I always wonder when I hear someone say that. So they helped someone--wonderful. But what if what they shared also hurt someone? Are they back to even?
