In order to scare the you-know-what out of their viewers, storm reporters have said the following:

1. The winds will snap the telephone poles in half!

2. The storm will continue all day Sunday!

3. Sleep on the first floor 'cause your roof will fall in!

4. Be sure to have enough food for a week!

Can you believe they actually said these things!!!

This is why it's so troubling to some of us!

I totally get being smart, prepared, organized, careful, etc. But the stuff they say is just so far beyond the pale that it probably doesn't help reasonable, rational people. But it DOES make crazy people more likely to do crazy things that will put others at peril.

I wish they could just report it as it is - no embellishment and no fear-mongering. Just stick with facts that maybe suggestions that are supported by the facts.

I've been watching Netflix all day but DH did turn on the TV to check the weather and he said that you can tell the reporters are getting bored, I mean, how many ways can you say that it's snowing, it's windy, stay off the roads????????

There's no doubt that this is a significant storm. Nevertheless, it is not the end of the world. There will be stupid people who will do foolish things but for the vast majority, they will hunker down and stay home. The 24/7 cable news channels will make the storm sound like the end of the world. Living in upstate NY, I know what blizzards can do. You just gave to stay inside until roads are cleared after the storm ends. Some people will be idiotic but the cable news networks make it sound like snowstorms have never happened before.

I've been tuning out the east coast centric cable media. I live in California where I can see snow on distant mountains but I don't have to be in it unless I want to. We have been getting a lot of rain which we really need. My winter garden is still intact, with lots of beets, turnips, arugula and come spring, sugar snap peas that are about a foot high. Life is good.

How did we ever get along before 24 hour news? I have been in horrible blizzards and they never made national news. My mom watches the cable news and she keeps texting me about how I should act. Don't go out, move away from your trees, make sure you don't drive anywhere. Every text has exclamation points. I told her the news is making it sound so much worse than it is where I live anyway. I love you mom for caring, but stop watching cable.

Where was this said? The storm is far worse than expected in the Philadelphia area.

The storms are every bit as bad as they've been predicting for the metro-DC area. I'm sure when I go out to my deck tomorrow morning it will be well over 30 inches. I've made an executive decision to stay indoors until all the snow melts!!!!!

Well I take it seriously as some roofs have caved in this morning the county over.

We are nearing 30 inches and I am glad they play devil's advocate for the morons who laugh at this storm. People are stupid and the media needs to be extreme to get their attention.

@abbeythe 8th - I agree. I'm in the Philly suburbs and it is bad and still snowing heavily. I only watch local news when it comes to weather. None of them made any of the above comments.

There HAVE been roof collapses as a result of the heavy snow loads. Cautioning people about the possibility makes sense. I doubt that the reports have been made in the fashion you post, but that information IS important and being aware of the signs of roof collapse is important.

As much as some of you don't understand or agree with the reporting on this and other storms, I don't understand the endless rants about it given the extent of the damages, power losses to hundreds of thousands and the number of people stranded with this storm.

Assuming the news was coming from the states hardest hit, I see nothing wrong with this news report. The things listed can really happen.

Exactly!! It's easy to behave like that when they aren't gong though it.

In another thread it went even further that we chose to live in the areas that are affected. It just never ends with the ignorance here.

Yes, because these things (at least some of them) COULD happen in some areas. Then they would be accused of not warning people. Besides, some people are so ignorant about weather conditions and effects you have to scare the bejeebers out of them to keep them safe!
Yesterday we had winds gusting to 35 mph and trees were so covered in ice they were snapping everywhere.

Things are pretty bad in NYC as well. I have drifts over 3 feet on my walkway and my car has 3-4 feet on the roof. They are trying to plow but although traffic is banned there are people who feel the need to get out and drive and clog up the streets when they skid off the road and get stuck.

I invite those looking for an alternative to 24/7 storm reporting to enjoy some lovely figure skating (NBC) or first-rate tennis (ESPN2) tonight. I will be switching between the U.S. Skating Championship and the Australian Open.

The pictures I've seen on the news don't look that bad - the worst is stupid people traveling and getting stuck out in the snow.
