Influenza Season

Just heard on the news that my state lost its first child to the flu this season, a 12 year old. The mother said it was just four days from diagnosis to death. I think they said she went into kidney failure, which can be a complication of the flu. I wonder how long she had it before she started showing real signs of illness. She did not have a flu shot.

How awful ! That poor little girl.

We all had our shots and so far my state hasn't reported many cases.

So sad, wish she had been able to get the vaccine.

Only one confirmed case in my state.

If need be I drag those I love to get a flu vaccination and a pneumonia vax.

Oh my gosh. I saw an article on the web about her after reading your post. Beautiful angel baby, her family's everything. Can't find the words when these things happen to our precious children... Thanks for posting, O/P. It can literally be a life and death reminder about flu shots.

This is indeed very sad.

It still remains controversial, whether flu shots cause other medical conditions, and if they really help and are totally safe, yet I rather take them, than not.

I'm also in Washington, Spokane.

I was also, just reading the story. So sad! Her Mom said she took her to the Doctor, three times.

So many people think of the Flu as an illness that can make you sick for several days, but, you get thru it; it's not really that serious.

For generally healthy adults, that's often true.

The young, the elderly, people with health conditions, that compromise their immune systems, the Flu can be very dangerous.

So very sad.

There is a nasty virus going around the Midwest. Starts as a cold and then goes into either pneumonia or a secondary infection. My grandson who is 8 ended up with pneumonia and my son with an ear and sinus infection. Both were sick for close to a month. I know about 6 prople who have had it in some form in the last month.

The doctor's office said it is not the' flu' virus.

I was born and raised in Spokane but left after graduation from high school. I don't remember ever getting the flu when I was in high school there. I just got respiratory infections. Now it seems there are so many different strains of flu. I get the shots and have been fairly lucky. I still get the respiratory infections but not so much the flu. Keeping my fingers crossed. Nobody should die aat 12 years old of anything, much less the flu. That poor family.

My husband and I had it last year at this time even though we had a flu shot. One of my kids had it as a teen with high fevers. It scared me but there was a full recovery. I had a little fever, but mostly barely enough energy to move, a cough, and horrible headaches. I went to the doctor but it didn't help much.

I got a flu shot on November 18th and have been sick ever since. Not bedridden sick, but sick nonetheless. Just came off my third round of antibiotics. Ugh

Australia has introduced the "No Jab, No Bill" to parliament that would require parents to vaccinate their child or they will lose benefits and the child tax credit if they don't. I think that is a wonderful idea and I hope the US adopts it. If you don't want to vaccinate your child, fine, but don't expect to receive these benefits.

I got the pneumonia shot and shingles vac, but my gyn sort of poo-pooed the flu shot so I bypassed that. I remember in the mid-60s there was this thing called the Asian Flu going around. I was the only one in my family to get it, but I was flat on my back sick as a dog for a week. My mom, one of the rare ones who worked at the time, would drive home at noon and check on me. We were required to have a permission slip from a doctor to come back to school, it was a real epidemic. The hangover from that? I heard the song I'll Sing in the Sunshine a thousand times that week, and never recovered from my dislike of that song or association with being sick with it.

My prayers are with the family that lost their beautiful child to, what? The flu. Should not happen.

@MaggieMack I also got the Asian flu as a young girl. I was so sick and delirious with fever for two weeks. I have never been that sick since and remember how awful I felt.
