“2015 was by far the record year in all of the temperature datasets that are based on the instrumental and surface data,” said Gavin Schmidt, director of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies at NASA, which made the announcement jointly with NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Here's the increase report and comment:

"A lot of times, you actually look at these numbers, when you break a record, you break it by a few hundredths of a degree,” said Thomas Karl, director of NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information. “But this record, we literally smashed. It was over a quarter of a degree Fahrenheit, and that’s a lot for the global temperature.”

I have never seen SF heat like we had it last year, it was shocking.

Typically, growing up and for most of my life, we had about three hot days a year. A YEAR. But last year we had months and months of hot weather.

People here are not used to that. No one has AC and old people and the chronically ill were in danger, there are no cooling centers here.

Quite a few problems here.

The NOAA has been in the middle of a lot of scandals. Look it up. They've also contradicted themselves.

Volcanoes put more filth into the atmosphere than all of mankind.

There have been over 100 temp-change scandals so it would show up as warming.

Temps have only been accurate rather recently. There's also the issue of how they're recorded.

City temps will read as warming due to the increase of people, machinery, cars/trucks, tar, cement, steel, HVAC, glass and so on.

Then there's that pesky thing that started it all--the sun. It burns hotter, we're hotter.

How arrogant is mankind to think we have the power to do anything like create the weather?

June was awful in SE FL in 2015. My electric bills were off the charts. We are feeling the change in my part of FL for sure.

Easy. Climate change and Global Warming are two different things.

Climate change is local, global warming is the average temp of the earth.

This is all pretty easy stuff. Global warming causes extreme changes in the weather, from very hot to very cold. From drought to El Nino.

Easy to look up, also.

The warming of the earth has already been proven, there is no question about it. Data has shown that for years now, especially by routine testing of the planet's oceans.

It's also shown by record keeping of the world's temperatures, which, not surprising, keep getting warmer.

Alice, thank you for not removing the entire line. This is science, not politics, and we need to know what is happening to our planet, especially with the glaciers melting and fish dying, all because our oceans are much warmer.

Your state isn't the only representive or all of the earth. This is a collective not measuring one state. Its the measurement of the EARTHS temperture not your small on the dot of the earth state. Is it really that hard to understand?

Baby sea lions are washing up on our local beaches, starving and dying.

Why?

"So what’s going on? Experts at NOAA say that the culprit is rising ocean temperatures. (On a call with reporters Wednesday, a NOAA climate expert said that they do not believe the stranding increase is tied to climate change.) The warm temperatures are somehow affecting the squid, sardines and other animals that are the core diet of sea lions, perhaps driving the prey deeper into the water or farther offshore."

That is so true. Reports last year from India and surrounding areas had the temp reaching an all time high of 164 degrees. They didn't know if the people in those areas would be able to live through it for very long.

That is not a climate conducive to human life.
