Emailing Others... is it old school

Daughters and grandchildren came for my husbands birthday this weekend. I am pretty good with computers, use them all the time and can usually figure out most problems. And I thought I WAS UP ON THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY....

But this one stunned me.

EMAIL IS NOT THEIR METHOD OF CHOICE TO COMMUNICATE, ANYMORE.

I was told to USE TWITTER, OR SNAPCHAT, OR TEXT OR WHATEVER....

Am I so out of touch? I thought email was the replacement for mailing letters or using the phone to actually call someone.

However my granddaughter did TEXT my daugher, her mother, who was upstairs to bring her down a sweater.

I must be really getting old.

Yes, as far as I can tell, texting is the current way to communicate especially among the "younger" set.

My middle age son told me that "no one emails anymore." I told him that is not true; I email all the time.

Well this 'dinosaur' still uses email to communicate. I don't own a cellphone, nor am I registered on facebook, twitter, or snapchat. And last year my carrier pigeons flew the coop.

I don't think your friends and relatives should expect you to text if you don't do it. I would just call people. I don't think people email instead of phone or text because emails just get buried in a bunch of junk.

if your family wants you to use snapchat or twitter I would ask what they prefer and just use one.

Email is out. I only use it if the content is large or contacting say a business.

I guess it's personal preferences!

I get frustrated when someone wants to use texting to communicate long or complicated information. If it takes more than a text or 2 to get the information shared, then I see that as needing a phone call or e-mail.

Same with twitter which has a character limit and snapchat which is for sharing pictures. I find snapchat to be the most tedious app, at least on my phone. It doesn't want to open half the time.

With your granddaughter texting to her mom upstairs, I guess it saves shouting right?

I get texting (not in the same room or household-how lazy can you get?) especially if you are away from each other but Twitter and Snapchat to talk to your family members? Unless you are already on there and it's a fun thing for everyone, um, no.

This is my opinion but I would have my children find their manners and behave with common courtesy especially towards their elders. How about you actually give your grandparents the gift of your voice and call them? Used to be a thing back in the day.

The only person I really email with is my mom. Or my husband if it's something detailed. Otherwise all I use is text for personal digital communication. My kids know I'm much more likely to see a text than an email if it's a time sensitive communication. I don't use social media pages though, I'm not interested in sharing everything I do with the world.

I am 36 and I still like emails.

I do text a lot.

Never got into the snapchat or tweeting, etc. I usually have too much to say to fit there!

I'm 46 and don't use email unless I have to because the person I'm communicating with can't or won't text or use a messaging app. My email is mostly just junk, order confirmations, and people asking for money. I rarely even read my personal email because such a small percentage of it is important. I only email my parents and two friends who don't use texting or Facebook.

I often text pictures I've taken to my kids who are in the house because I know they would want to save them. They are usually cute pictures of antics the pets have been up to.

LOL I will not text my mom, I'm afraid once she figured it out I'd be inundated with the gods only know what. She's bad enough with the forward emails.

I agree with that. We use instant messaging a lot in business and people often message or email me with complex issues and if it's not sorted in 2 exchanges, I tell them I will call them. Some things just aren't easy to get across in writing.

I guess I was used to everyone screaming at one another but big families are loud. Do you all really walk around with your phone on your hip at home? If I am home, I'm not looking at my phone. I got better things to do.

I'm a salesperson and notice how LAZY people get re: actual, real communication.

I steer clear of e-mail...something written out can often sound totally different than what I want to convey. It's good for sending contracts, or answering a specific request for more information - but that's about it.

In sales, it's important to have a human connection. Texting, e-mailing, instragram, etc. - make it a LOT easier for clients to say "no". It also conveys laziness on MY part - if a salesperson really wants business, they will see people face to face..even going out in miserable weather.

A wise manager once said that people need to EAT with you before they will trust you enough to invest with our advertising products.

I still think that's true. Even the Swedish guy from Million Dollar Listing says that nothing beats face to face contact.

If it's time sensitive and we are in the same house, I'll walk down the hall. Cute cat pictures can wait though so I text those. I do usually have my phone out sitting on my desk if I'm working there or in the kitchen if I'm cooking because I'm using a recipe that is on it. And besides that's what notifications are for.

I hardly use e-mail for personal comminication. If I am fowarding an article perhaps to my aunt who is in her 60's, a business matter.

My brother, niece, nephew, SIL, etc. We tend to text a lot.

I forgot to add that I am 48 and I do not use Twitter, Snapchat, or Instagram.

@jaxs mom Okay, good. You were scaring me a little bit. I was envisioning the SNL skit of the home on fire and everyone in their bedrooms looking for a cell signal to text their loved one in the other room to get out and save themself.

If I have to use twitter or shapchat or anything except an occasional text, email, or an actual phone call, the person or persons on the other end are no longer important to me.
