Police Office targeted and murdered in Ohio

Suspect in custody, said he wanted to kills a police officer.

And SOME people think LE officers are always to blame when a suspect gets killed. This is just another example of what they face day to day.

In EVERY field there are the ugly; police are no exception..nor are doctors...nor are teachers...etc. But, the MAJORITY are good people doing their very best. We have allowed many to portray the police as ALL being horrible humans and so...what this murderer did is to be expected and I'm sure applauded by too many.

I hate seeing stories like this. Too many now take law enforcement officers for granted and don't seem to fully understand their ever present risks.

Heartfelt condolences to the family of this officer and his "Brother and Sister Officers".

Just yesterday there was a shoot out here, with one officer being killed and another wounded. Perp was a drug dealer with an illegal weapon and was killed by other officers when he fired upon them as well. Later when the perp's mother and brother showed up to the scene, the brother attacked one police officer and sucker punched him in the face, then head butted another officer. Both were arrested. Some strange kind of family values going on there.

The officer killed was a respected member of the force and had just returned to work after winning his battle with cancer (twice). Heartbreaking situation.

I know a policeman. I read these stories and wonder, HOW many people will apply in the future to be a cop?

The wives and husbands and children of cops today.

The worry...fear they live, GROWING day by day.

Many years ago my sisters daughter was murdered.

I read the news, watch the news, listen to the news.

Somebodys ..somebody does NOT come home :-(

SOME people think LE is always to blame. Others just expect LE to behave differently than common street criminals. Most people celebrate the majority of police officers who do their job and stay within the law without profiling, excess violence, aggression, etc. That's all most people want: fairness and accountability. LE is a dangerous profession. We all recognize that, and it takes very special people who have common sense, restraint, people skills, and a sense of justice for all to be good at it. Burn out is common, which is understandable. We salute those at the top of their profession, we mourn those good officers who give their lives trying to uphold the law and keep us safe, and we want those who aren't exemplary drummed out of it. Is that too much to expect in any profession dealing with the public?

This is very true. and the issue about police being portrayed in a not-so-good light, I fault those few bad apples that have had the trust of the community put in them and they have essentially committed crimes while wearing badges. If I were a polic officer, THAT is who I would be mad at. However, I HIGHLY doubt that "what this murder did will be applauded by many". That is an awful thing to say and when thigns like that are said, it contributes to the problem...

I live in Chicago, so there is a huge problem here right now with all of this.... I do hope trust is restored on both sides soon.

I agree. They fear retaliation and being told that if they request backup, none will show up for them if they tell. But threats like that just drive home the fact that the person making the threat needs to go.

where did you see examples of police falsifying reports? During an internal investigation it is my understanding that no stone is left unturned.

just because the public doesn't agree with outcomes at times does not mean there was falsification or lies being told.

Why are Police Officers singled out, there need to be this peer review in all professions. Teachers, Doctors, Social Workers etc., there are numerous reports in these professions yet no one is on the streets protesting about these abuses.

Here is just one exapmle, though I'm guessing this will get poofed.

A young man was shot by a police officer in Chicago 18 months ago. Numerous police were on scene, and they were requesting a unit with a taser to come to the scene, as the kid was not listening to orders to surrender. they had the streets blocked off, the kid was wandering around. in this video, a police car pulls up, a cop gets out and shoots the boy 16 times as he was walking away. The city kept this vidoe under wraps for 17 months. All of the police officers put in their official reports that the boy 'lunged' at this cop (meaning, it was justifiable). that was the official story until the video came out. It is right below, you can see for yourself, he did not lunge. He was walking away. The cop has now been charged with murder. The city tried to cover it up by paying the family 5 million dollars as long as they agreed to keep the video under wraps. If an investigative journalist had not sued to get the video released, that would have been the 'official' story, this cop would never had been charged, and would possibly go on to kill another person while on duty. Only after the video was released was the police superintendant fired. This is why there are protests daily in Chicago and calls for the mayor to resign.

Had a mild incident and we were stuck on a busy and fast and furious intersection. A police officer did a fast u turn and came up behind us. He stayed with us until Triple A came to get us. He even called them after we did to make sure they were coming. We live rural so it could have been a long wait. He was a delightful young man, Canine Unit so his dog was with him. In any case I gave him a great big YELLOW ROCK (square dance hug) when it was all said and done. I will tell you one thing this guy had on a vest, no guess work. I guess even in our area they are targets.

He told me a story how he helped in Baltimore during the recent protests and said people marched by with hateful looks. When I told him I was a retired teacher... his comment was "welcome to the club." We too are targets but not as serious.

My heart goes out to the family of the police officer and his family in Ohio. And my ultimate respect to all those who serve and protect.

I don't know how anyone not in law enforcement can make such a statement. If you are in law enforcement, what is considered to be "way too often", any specific facts or numbers on this?

Oh I think it's implicit that we expect peer review in all professions dealing with the publilc. There is a tendency in some to not necessarily cover for, but to turn the other way at colleagues who are violators of trust or the law. It is a problem in many places.

You can't make a statement against a wrong unless you're part of the profession???? Seriously? I guess that goes for all the other professions as well: teaching, doctoring, lawyering, etc. A doctor does something unprofessional and only another doctor can report it???

If someone who has sworn to serve and protect the community, and my tax dollars go to pay their salary, commits a crime ONCE while on duty and his colleagues cover it up, then that is too often.

The overwhelming majority of police officers are amazing and I am thankful for their service. But that does not mean we should ignore the few who are a disgrace to the profession and not demand accountability.
