I hear this often and it bothers me!

People saying..." I seen..." instead of " I saw..."

I hear it everywhere including media.

Please people speak correctly! This makes me cringe and sounds ignorant in my opinion.

Please don't start telling me there are more important things in life or to get over it. I'm just making an observation and voicing my opinion.

Nah, I'm not going to jump you for that.

My little pet peeve, is when people write "would of" instead of "would HAVE".

Yes, when you say, "would have" it sounds like "would of", but to write "would of" is 100% incorrect!

I admit it does cause the hair on the back of my neck to stand up when I hear that. LOL Also, when someone says they are going to itch something. No ... something itches so you are going to scratch it.

I agree that it's poor grammar and sounds like nails on a chalkboard. I don't like it either. I learned a long time ago that that i can't control other people. But I can control my reaction to others. I have enough problems of my own that I don't need to worry and fret about things I can't control.

I went off to a university at age 17 with the plan to become a high school English teacher. Once I completed student teaching at a California high school and received my degree and teaching credential, I put them in a drawer along with the idea of teaching in the public schools.

It was clear to me at that point why many of my high school and college English instructors were alcoholics.

("Where are you at?" is one that I hear much too often.)

How about when people say TURLIT, instead of TOILET,plus, LICENESS, instead of LICENSE,WARSH instead of WASH.

When I hear "I seen," I go nuts. Worse, to me, is "I should have went." A famous baseball manager says that all the time. When he says it during a press conference, I tease my husband by telling him it's no wonder his team hasn't won the World Series for a long time.

Similarly, "between you and I" is actually incorrect. It should be "between you and me."

English is a difficult language. I respect anyone who tries to learn it.

In many cases what we hear is a regional pronunciation that differs from our regional pronunciation. Back in the 80s PBS produced a documentary about the different "languages" in the United States. The language was really English, but the dialects and common expressions/colloquialisms were so different that it was as if people weren't speaking the same language at all. Absolutely fascinating.

But look at England and all the different dialects and expressions.

That may be one way to look at it. Another way to regard this is that some people are concerned that the integrity of a great language has been compromised because we, as a society, have become lax about its proper usage.

The only thing that sounds ignorant to me is being so judgmental about something that really shouldn't matter to anyone. I judge a person only on how they live their lives and treat others. Someone can have perfect grammar and diction and treat others nasty and rude!! I'd rather be around sweet, generous and understanding people with bad grammar than someone with perfect grammar who treats others poorly without compassion.

I haven't heard that since I was 9 years old but I do hear other forms of bad grammar that drive me crazy. When I hear it, it's like nails on a chalkboard. Then I forget it and just concentrate on what is being said, not how it's said. I'm 55 and I truly do not want to become one of those older people who nit picks over things that really aren't important.

Perhaps we should abandon all standards then, lest we be perceived as judgmental. Some mocked the French for so fiercely defending the integrity of their language and working to keep it from being corrupted. Clearly they just wanted the people to be able to communicate effectively with one another.

Teachers were once paid to nitpick. It was their job to prepare students to read, write and speak. They didn't care if they were judgmental. Now they don't dare correct a student. Red ink on a paper may be too traumatizing.

How about people who say, "your's and I's" instead of your's and my" drives me nuts! I hear it on tv constantly. Let's face it, proper grammar has not been taught in schools in decades. The word "an" has completely been obliterated, people saying "a" in it's place, which sounds awful to me.
