Diappointed in The Revenant

We saw The Revenant last night and I have to say it didn't live up to my expectations, given all the hype it has received.....and the fact that the director and lead actor received Golden Globes.

I should say that it was a good movie....I just didn't feel it was a GREAT movie. In my opinion, though Leo DiCaprio was very good, it wasn't his best performance. I think both Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl) and Bryan Cranston (Trumbo) both turned in better performances.

I guess my review boils down to I liked the movie, but I didn't love the movie. I think it's a movie worth seeing.....I just don't think it's Oscar-worthy.

I don't plan to see the movie First, I rarely watch deep, dark movies. By that I mean dramas that can be so depressing (even with an uplifting ending) that I carry the movie with me fo a long time. I know it's based on real events but that just makes it worse for me. If I go to see a movie I want a comedy... just because laughing makes me feel better.

The other element is that I can't take DiCaprio and haven't been able to since the beginning of his career. Just can't watch him ... I know I'm in the minority.

I agree with you CardinalGirl. My husband and I saw the movie and thought it was just ok. We also saw Creed and loved it and wondered why no nomination other than Stallone who deserved the Golden Globe and hopefully will win an Oscar.

Dh and I saw Sisters on Sunday. What a disappointment. Another bunch of SNL alumns who just can't make funny movies IMO.

I already started a thread over in TV and Movies for the posters. I enjoyed the film. It's story line is the inheritance of this nation.

We loved Creed. I was so pleasantly surprised by it. Creed and Brooklyn were my 2 favorite (recent) movies.

We went last Saturday. It was very realistic and left me shaking. (says a lot since I watch the walking dead) I thought it was the role of his lifetime. We totally enjoyed it.

Saw it and loved it. Very intense. You could have heard a pin drop in the theater. Beautiful cinematography.

DH and I loved the movie. Leo was fabulous!!!!!. However, I do admit to turning my head a few times because it got to me.

However, my favorite movies of the year were Joy, Star Wars, Jurassic World, and Martian. I did not see Brooklyn or the Danish Girl (never came here). I know i will love Brooklyn. My husbands favorite movie was the Martian, then Star Wars, and Jurassic World. He also liked the Big Short. I did too but not as much as him. And he didnt like Joy as much as me.

Everyone has different opinions I guess? :-)

I don't particularly care for him either. For some reason when I watch his movies I see him not the character he is supposed to be portraying. For me that translates to bad acting, but I realize I am in the minority too.

I just can't watch movies involving excessive violence and sadism. This movie seems to have both...to an over the top degree.

That's not my idea of "entertainment". Comments in the NYTs said it was an ordeal to watch. My son got a screener...and hated it. He appreciated the technical aspects of the movie - but not the story.

I think Leo DiCaprio is a wonderful actor and that he should have benn awarded an Oscar long ago for any of several different movies. However, in this movie, I think that his acting boiled down to grunting and looking miserable. Taking into account the elements to which he was subjected (bitter cold, snow....even plunged into icy waters), I don't think it was a big stretch to look miserable.

Like I said, I still thought it was a good movie and I think he did a fine job.....just not Oscar caliber. If he does get the nod, I think it will be because members of the academy think he's overdue to win and not specifically because of this performance.

A masterpiece. Difficult to watch at times, but incredible. Leo was outstanding.

I did not see it, but hubby and son saw it and really did not like it, although they said the cinematography was beautiful...but that was it.

This speaks directly to the stuff coming out of the movie industry for years. Take a look at the producers and directors. Look at what they're putting out there for you for humongous bucks.

You have a choice to view unbelievable violence, wickedness, acts of madness, sadism, masochism, etc.

That's not where I want my head to be - ever.

Do you remember when Tom Hanks was nominated for an Academy Award for Castaway? He hardly had a word! Didn't win, though, lost to Russell Crowe for Gladiator.

I haven't seen Revenant yet, but will, after I finish the book. It takes place in my neck of the woods.

I love Tom Hanks and was hoping he would win the Oscar for his OUTSTANDING performance in Castaway. He was BRILLIANT in that role.

ETA: Hanks was also amazing in the movie Philadelphia. He is so talented. I think he won an Oscar (and rightfully so) for his OUTSTANDING performance.

Tom Hardy was awesome as usual but Leo, was OK. He was good of course but agree not his best performance. Don't think it was an Oscar performance. A beautifully shot film. Still have a lot of movies to see before deciding who gave this years best performance.
