I can't believe that he is now old enough to go to Preschool!

The little prince is only 2 1/2. It's not like his mother has to return to work so he's off to day care. I think we send little ones off to school too soon. Let them be children.

Most mothers around here send their children to preschool for the learning experience, not for day care. Montessori schools are very popular here, also, and focus on creativity and individual learning. The Montessori method is highly regarded.

Many studies have shown that preschool is a valuable education tool, children's minds develop at an amazing rate from birth to age five. That time should not be wasted.

Going to preschool does not prevent him from "being a child". The opportunity of being part of a group of children his age will grow his social and emotional maturity. Self help skills, mastery of discipline and understanding of sharing thrive at this age. I am sure he is not going to school for a full day...probably hours a week! He looks so much like his dad and Princess Diana!

My daughter started going to school before she was two, it was run by the education department of SF together with the hospital where she was born. It was required that a parent attend with the children, we learned together. It was a wonderful learning and socialization experience, a lot of play for the children, learning songs and games.

She went on from there to pre-school, which she also loved. As Corita said, pre-school was only a couple of days a week and a few hours each time.

Just as others here, I am entitled to my opinion. I am a mother of 2 and the grandmother of 4. Both our children and the 3 oldest grandchildren went to pre school. I do know more than a little about early childhood education. I could site reasons based on personal experience, why I feel 2 1/2 is too young for school. I merely stated my opinion and am not trying to convince others to share that opinion.

I'm sure not a really popular point of view, but I have to agree.

I know education starts earlier all the time, and a couple of hours per week in an educational setting at this age I can be fine with, but I really think kids need to be home more and longer than many of them get to be in this day and age.

When my son was little I chose more educational 'classes' that were 'mommy and me' based, and they are available in the arts, science, and other areas.

Two and three years old is just too young, in my book, to be in 'school' on a daily basis, even if it is only a few hours a day. I feel the same way about daycare too.

Absolutely! While we all may have different ideas about preschool, we all have the right to state them. Our personal lives will very much influence our opinion!!! I trained child care staff for over 20 years and my children started their "school" history by attending preschool. My personal experiences with "preschool" were very positive!!!

No one is being forced to send their children to pre-school, it's a personal decision and one that most educators support.

Just to clarify for the record, as a former educator, it is my feeling that starting school before the age of three is a bit early.

I'm a retired educator as well as a mother and grandmother. My peers are now retired after raising families and successful careers. Formal education for most of us began at age 5 with kindergarten. Now children have 2 or 3 years in school before they get to kindergarten.

There are tons of preschools everywhere you go. I sometimes wonder if the real reason they are there is to make money as opposed to educate children. In my state and my daughter's, you need a 2 year degree to teach pre-school.

Pre-K I see as essential in most cases.
