Which Compliment Holds More Weight

Now I will take a compliment from anyone who is willing to give it (don't get that many). I was thinking, does a compliment mean more from a man or woman? I think a compliment means more to me from a woman. I feel a kinship with her, she knows what goes into getting yourself together. I feel men don't realize what we women do to make ourselves feel good and look good.

Even Raquel Welch says she doesn't wake up looking like Raquel Welch.

Yes ladies can apply makeup and use other items to enhance their looks but I do think a wise man looks at the internal beauty. I know I do.

I worked for many years with a beautiful young women and yes, she woke up looking beautiful. She was mistaken for Whitney Houston many times, but she as so much more beautiful than Whitney.

I was surprised when she once told me that compliments about her looks didn't mean much to her. She said she enjoyed compliments about her children and what a good mother to them she was.

They were compliments about her accomplishments rather than her good fortune ( her looks ). I never forgot what she said. I now compliment other women on their achievements as well as their clothing or hair, etc.

I agree with her. Compliments about looking beautiful, at least in my mind, seem shallow. For some, it's complimenting on a genetic gift, for others is compliments for effort put into external appearance to please some esthetic ideal.

Compliments for a job well done or for an effort that benefits someone, those are compliments that I think are worth giving and getting.

The beautiful female friends I've known over the years looked beautiful with or without makeup. Physical beauty is a gift, and I've never understood why people blessed in this way were expected to put themselves down. Women can be so incredibly mean to other women who have an uncommon amount of good looks. I had a friend in high school who was one such person and the behavior of the other girls towards her was nothing short of unprovoked hostility and jealousy. She was one of the nicest people you would ever want to meet, never mean to anyone. Look how some people treat Lisa Robertson on this board! I think it was the same thing. I was glad that I kept a low profile in high school because it kept these mean girls off my back.

Sorry for the outburst, but someone who looks beautiful made up looks pretty darned good without the make-up as well.

It's not PC, but I think most women value a compliment on their appearance more from a man than from another woman (unless he's a creep or she's someone who hates you and you know it kills her to say it).

The compliments I get validate my choices in what I'm wearing. I've had women and men say that I look like a movie star. That may seem over the top, but it makes me believe I'm doing something right.

I dont look for or care if I get compliments but if so its nice from anyone. For me its nice to get compliments from the people I care about most, i.e. my husband and my family.

This also reminds me of what they used to say. You know youre older when you run into someone you havent seen in a while, and they say you look good. (In comparism to what? Bad? lol). When we are in our 20s or 30s people dont say that. They say something different than oh you look good..

My grandmother is the only one who ever told me I looked like a movie star (when I was 13). It kind of makes the point that not all compliments are equal. I could have looked like the Hunchback of Notre Dame and she would have said something nice!
