Oh, sorry @Lila Belle, I didn't mean to imply that I live there, I've just been following it in the news. My comment about the EPA was that they seem to get so over-involved in some inconsequential things, but are nowhere to be found when the human population really needs them.

Is it a gas company (oil) or the gas company?

Usually the EPA is all over oil companies like white on rice.

If it's a gas company of CA, I'm surprised that (the state of) California isn't on them worse than white on rice.

My information is coming from the rig located on Porter Ranch.

The men and women that work on that rig.

The leak is coming from a storage area underground. Casings (pipes) from all locations send gas to that area until it is needed.

It belongs to Southern Ca. Gas Company. The State of Ca. does not own this company. The gas is used to heat homes and buildings and used for cooking. It is not a oil company.

Because of the GREAT Danger to the well and the men & women working on the new relief well Halliburtion Boots & Coots Services are on stand by. The men and women are drilling a new relief well using slant drilling. They are using heavy mud while they are slant drilling to get to the casing (pipes) in the gas underground.

The slant drilling will drill into the casing located in the natural earth gas storage area.

The heavy mud is heavier than the gas. So it forces the gas deeper down. While they are drilling the heavy mud will travel upward outside the casing forcing the rocks & soil into a screen to collect and to later return back to earth.

Than later cement is pumped down into the location where the gas and heavy mud are located ....which closes off the escaping gas. What they are doing is called Abandoning the well. Shutting it down.

They have to be careful about having a blowout. Reason why Boots & Coots are standing by. Boots & Coots is one of the world's premier well control companies. Veterans of Red Adair Services. The two companies put out about one third of the more than 700 oil well fires set in Kuwait by retreating Iraqi soldiers in the Gulf War.

I'm surprised too...And the video was released by environmental groups...nobody really knew how bad it was. Those residents have every right to be po'ed.

The environmental groups are all over the place.

Southern Ca. Gas Company is a Utility company. A private company supplying gas which is granted a monopoly by the government and then regulated by the government.

When everything is handled and done the public will pay for all the costs in their gas bill. More money spent the Utility company will make more money.

Maybe SoCalGas should have replaced the safety valve 3 decades ago when it went bad. Not just remove it.

It has nothing to do with a safety valve.

The casings are about 30-40 feet long with threads on both ends that screw together. And the movement of Ca. natural earth movements helped seperate the casings. Left the opening.

The two casings that came apart was located 12 hundred feet down in to the earth. That was when the gas located in the earth layers traveled along the layers upward and escaped.

The gas is deep in the earth layers. The casings are placed deep into the earth to where the gas is located. This allows companies that need the gas to release the gas.

i was in Woodland Hills this week and heard a lot about it. What a shame. Makes me really, really angry!! Wasn't there also a leak near Alisos Road or Canyan? I pray all is well, and this is contained and ended right now.

Here is a interview with Erin Brockovich saying THEY did remove a safety valve and never replaced it.

Does not look good at all.This video below has a special lense so you can see the gas and its alot coming out..Not good at all.

Again...... the casings came apart deep below the ground, and the earth moved....causing the gas to travel along the layers of the earth. And escaped out into the layers of the mountain and went out of the ground. This happened 12 hundred feet below ground.

All the men and women working on the rigs have on their body a tiny gage that measures methane gas. It is the size of a cell phone.

It's taking WAY too long to fix this mess. Porter Ranch is about 25 miles from where I am and we hear about it on the news almost every evening.

You would think BP would have been a wakeup call call to utilities.

What a disruption for families, moving kids, pets, clothing, mail service, computer, furniture etc. I cannot even imagine all the complications of relocating temporarily. I understand there is security protecting the homes. Empty houses need to be checked regularly. There can be water leaks or other problems in unattended homes.
