THROUGH THE MENTAL FILING CABINETS.....

Guess it is official, I'm a senior citizen ! Over the weekend several times a question was asked and I knew I knew the answer but could not immediately state it. Hours, sometimes a day later, the answer just came out when I was not thinking about it.

E.g., an episode of American Pickers featured an early 20th century car--the LaSalle-- and I pointed out that that was the car in the opening song to a favorite sitcom "...Gee, our old LaSalle ran great, Those were the days..." What was the name of the series? Couldn't remember then. Today, out of nowhere: "All in the Family". Where was it when I needed it?

Last night heard a familiar voice in the background of a commercial-- came up with a mixed syllable rendition of his name (Roddy McDowell)--both DH and I knew whom I was trying to name but neither of us got it then.

Waking from a dream this AM, I tried to remember the name of someone who worked for me in the 1970's and got several of the letters in her last name. An hour later the last name popped out.

I used to be great at asking the Jeopardy questions, but now I would never make the contestant cut. It is frustrating but absolutely fascinating how the brain " searches through mental filing cabinets in the mind " to ultimately build the answer !!!!

Hope it keeps on working through senior status.

I've been accustomed to this for some of my 81 years now. But the thing that still takes me down first is getting into the pantry and not remembering why I am there.

And isn't it interesting that you can remember the name of the person who sat next to you in high school English, but can't remember the name of your current next door neighbor sometimes? They say the short term memory goes first. I wonder how long it takes for the long term memory to catch up with it.

I've always been like that. Horrible with names. Each new job, I had to draw pictures of the co-workers.....and the location of their work stations.....in order to try and remember their names.
