Outrageous Shipping Charge Or Not?

I admit it, this shocked me. I looked around the clearance section for kids in a well known store. Saw a cute little melamine three piece lunch set for a child, on sale for $15. Small plate, small bowl and drink container.

Got to checkout and the shipping charge was $9.

When shipping is 55% of the cost of the shipment? I would not pay that much, that I know.

When we consumers look at the shipping charges, we like to see them in relation to what we're paying for the item, but the cost to the company to ship is the same whether you buy a cheap item or an expensive one - payment for the workers doing the packing, payment for the box and the other materials, payment for storage, etc. Insurance would be more on an expensive item - but the other costs are probably pretty constant.

And that's the main reason I try really hard not to mail gifts. I don't really love gift cards, but I'd rather add $10 to that card for the recipient to spend than to spend it on shipping.

I wanted an item at Crate and Barrel that was $9.99 and the shipping was $4.99. At that point I got in car and went to Crate and Barrel!!

As much as I love the clothes from J.Jill, their shipping charges are crazy. It goes by cost of the item vs. weight. So a $99 dress could easily have a $13.95 shipping fee! But if you order that same dress in a JJill store, there is no shipping. Crazy. So I either order in the store or wait until they offer free shipping.

I don't have a problem paying for shipping, I do have a problem paying alot for shipping!

I'm the same way for paying to park!

I'm pretty sure it doesn't usually cost $9 to ship 3 child size pieces of plastic. That is from the store to me, not from me to someone else.

I order most things online, I'm pretty familiar with normal charges for shipping.

Good idea!

Another service some stores are offering is free store pick up. Have what you want shipped to the store closest to you and they get it ready to go by the time you get there.

You would think that since gas prices have dropped by more than half, that the prices of shipping, and groceries, would have come down. Wasn't that the reason given for all of the price increases? BWAHAHAHA!

yes a bit too much but not as bad as this. I was going to get my husband a shirt from Patrick James' website. The shirt was on sale for about $135. When I went to check out, shipping was $14. That is crazy for a lightweight shirt. Also, I ordered from Beekman's website. Three items costing close to $100, not too heavy. Shipping was $19. Even if I omitted the more heavy item, shipping was going to be $14. I think it is crazy how much some of these places are charging for shipping when most places these days have free shipping over a certain amount.

I was just basically being lazy. I love to have items delivered and I hate shopping!! Besides it usually costs me money because I just have to stick my nose in Nordstrom, etc., etc

I fell for the Cath Kidston line while on a trip to London and occasionally shop their web site, but I have to really love it because the shipping is international and starts at $15.99. That is the only time I will pay that kind of steep fee. Otherwise I am totally a bargain shopper.

Yes, it's outrageous. I think some companies just use a range. I was looking at a two pack of fitbit bands on kohls website. They were $24.99 and weigh nothing. S/H was $8.95. I went over to Amazon and they were the same price, but no S/H.

I just checked - Kohl's is 8.95 on $0 - $100 and Macy's is $9.95. Too much. I was surprised at some of your posts. I wrongly assumed that every store had free shipping on clothes when the total was more than $100.

I am an MVP customer of Kohl's and I get almost daily alerts from Kohl's about their sales and promotions. I'd say about every 2 weeks I get offered free shipping on ANY purchase - no minimum required.

(I keep saying that my goal each year is to lose that MVP status but it hasn't happened yet).
