Advice, please?

I just received a Christmas package from my sister-in-law. As a joke, she sent a Pou-Pourri gift pack. (This was not a QVC shipment, by the way, but something she sent on her own via FedEx.) Well, when the package arrived, it was obvious that something had leaked, as the package was damp,and the Poupourri fragrance was very obvious. Upon opening the package, I discovered that the lid on one of the bottles had come unscrewed drenching the contents with the distinctive fragrance.

My question is: Do I tell her the package arrived in that condition, or do I just keep my trap shut, and say everything was OK? Two of the three bottles were still usable.

I hate to cause a problem for her, when it really isn't that big of a deal, but what do you think? Maybe she could get a refund for the poor packaging/delivery?

I think you answered your question when you stated that it really isn't a big deal. I would say nothing and let her have the joy of having gifted.

Since she sent it on her own and was responsible for the condition in which it was shipped, she can't get a refund from anyone. I'd just not mention the leak so she doesn't feel badly about something over which she now has no control.

I would not make a big deal out of it and just accept it as is since only one of the items leaked. I would say nothing.

I would just say thank-you and let it go at that. If she asked if everything was alright you could mention that one leaked but I would not volunteer that.

I am angry and very insulted. I feel it is MY choice who I want to donate to and not to be decided for me.

Merry Christmas @catwhisperer! I would only be insulted if the donation was made to an organization that the relative knew I would not support, ever, like it was in opposition to my moral core. If it is not morally objectionable, don't be angry, just make a mental note to do the same the next time the opportunity arises. Support your favorite charity with your "gift" to the relative.

It's their money. Say "you're welcome" and then give a donation to your chosen charity, and deduct it from you're income tax! Anger only hurts the one who's angry!

@fortune...I do give donations regularly and do not deduct it from my income taxes just for info.

I would make a donation in their name to a an organization they would never support. Not only is it presumptuous to attach your name to a group you may disapprove but you will be inundated with requests from that organization for eternity.

@catwhisperer, hmmmmm, so you have a passive aggressive relative it seems. Now that you know that, you are prepared. Do not let them get under your skin. Do not let them make you angry, that is their joy. I might say something like, "Thank you for making a charitable donation in my name. It will come in handy when I prepare my taxes."

Just say "Merry Christmas" in response. They donated their own money. It's not worth getting upset over.
